Advice on Cat C

Hi guys
Not my RS fortunately, but my daily pug 206 got a good smack from someone who didn't see me and pulled out from a car park causing my car to suffer some minor superficial damage.
She has held her hands up and everything has gone smoothly.
Got a call to say the car will be a Cat C but they will give me £xxxx + the car back if I wanted it to repair. The car cost me £500 a year ago but I have maintained her and she is worth her wait in gold for her efficiency, cost of tax and insurance (1.4HDI) and the financial settlement was considerably more than I had expected to be honest.
Now I have the car back and have sourced the parts (to a wholly sum of £65) which I will fit myself, but what do I have to do next regarding re-registering the car or declaring it to insurance etc???
I know the VIC check has been abolished but i have read many a differing protocol for re-introducing Cat C's back to the road!!!. I have read that I need to re-apply for a V5 that will state the car is Cat C!!. Also that I NEED to declare to insurance!!. Yet others have said that if you still have ownership of the V5 then that's not required and that the Cat C stays on a register for insurance payout purposes so if its involved in another claim its value is seriously reduced so will effect that payout!!.
The insurance company never stated anything to me at all about any legal requirements. I thought if there was anything legally obliging to be done they perhaps would!!.
Anyway. If anyone has experience or knowledge of the protocol then I will be grateful for some info.
