Very stubborn brake disc

Well tonight I had to change the font discs on my wife's R32 mk5 golf, I reckon 20min a side easy.

So straight home from work changed and car in the garage started with the drivers side which took me well over an hour just to get the disc off.

See pics, ended up having to split the disc from the hub using my heavy hammer and then using the grinder to split the centre of the disc to get it off.

Wait what? How is that possible, had the hat seized to the hub? What was holding it fast?
