My local Audi dealership have quoted me nearly £8k to get my '53 RS6 gearbox replaced.
Made me think it might just be time to wave goodbye to the old girl
Anyone got any recommendations to get that and the timing chain done ... preferably in the Cambridge area
The guys on piston heads have recommended A1 Premier Transmissions & A1 Gearboxes who are both nearby as well as Unit20.org in Cheshire and http://www.mackie-transmission.com/ in Glasgow
It's a great car but there's no way I can afford to put that much more into it as the S.O. would have a serious sense of humour failure.

Put it on a flat bed and send it either MRC or Unit20.

Mackies in glasgow are great....I had my rs6 box serviced by them as did previous owner and also know someone else that had them do a number of services on rs6 and also E60 5 series also.

There is Caledonian transmissions in Glasgow also that get a really good name as they previously worked for mackies before going out on their own and are cheaper,my mate had his Range Rover gearbox done by them when it decided to chuck it and they provided a lengthy warranty.

I was just writing a reply on pistonheads.

These guys have gearboxes in stock : http://www.transcentre.co.uk/
And I "think" are the company that Unit 20 etc use. 1850+Delivery+VAT for gearbox & torque converter.

It's a heroic amount of effort to pull - not because anything is complicated, just because there's an awful lot of things that need to be done in the right order. DIYing it (or using a local indie, I guess), you'd be looking at something like:
2 days to pull it out
0.5 days to split the engine and box.
1 day to put the new box and engine back together (lots of time spent drilling exhaust studs. Urgh!)
And 2 days back in again.

Unit20 etc can do it way quicker, I'm sure - they know all the shortcuts and have no learning curve on what needs pulling, where, when etc.

Once out, worth considering EGT & upper lambda sensors. Lambdas are cheap (I think geniune bosch were about 80 quid each). EGT a little more expensive. But both can "just" be done engine in if you drop the subframe, I'm told.
