Hi guys

Sick to death of waiting for our house purchase to complete and having only bought two cars this year, I have the urge to get another one for the hell of it, but for the parents this time, dipping in to the house fund again......

They have a A6 Avant that is a bit of a shed IMO and does sub 20MPG with NONE of the performance from the 2.4L Quattro setup. Sick of working on it for them.

I am 5 minutes away from this car so thought I would to and look at it for a laugh tomorrow and buy if happy/the price is right -

I spoke to the trader and it has Full History, mixed between Audi up to about 60k, then a couple of VAG specialists, including Monks Auto in Southampton. 3 Owners from new.

The timing belt has been done, but not the water pump. According to the work notes, the mechanic noted some slightly rounded bolts and a potentially broken bolt from what I gathered over the phone, so they left it right there! I have told the seller this is an immediate issue for me.

I have noted that the wheels are nicely scuffed. I have instructed the car to be stone cold when I go over there tomorrow to check, which they have agreed to. I could be imagining it but I am sure from the pics at least that she is riding high at the front, but there are a number of pics on the tinterweb that look like this too, confused.

I have Vagisil and a laptop so will query the ECU tomorrow too (unless the trader refuses and then goodbye!) but apart from that, are then any horrific things to look out for that you guy know of? Thanks

The 4 will be getting charged in due course, this is a random purchase gift for my parents because I am awesome like that and it a wet dream car for them. Again, any advice appreciated if anyone knows, thanks.

Well, after hearing about the lazy work (not) done by leaving the water pump in situ, I wasn't expecting tooooo much when I got there. The paintwork was pretty bad, with a number of scratches down to the Alu, scuffs on the corners of the rear quarters by the rear lights, multiple cracked/broken/lifting trim pieces on the doors. All four wheels were quite heavily scuffed/kerbed, budget tyres all round and signs of the front alignment being well out. It didn't help that due to the parking sensors being broken, they has reversed the car in to the corner of a wall on the forecourt and left it pressed in to the wall for me to see. Sufficed to say, more paint gone when I moved the car off the wall.....

I knew in under 20 seconds that the car wasn't right, but played the part of interested buyer anyway as I wanted to be thorough with it and test drive it too. The leather inside was ok for the most part, but there were lifting/damaged trim pieces on the dash and pretty well every bit of factory plastidipped trim was heavily worn/peeling off with a fingernail.

I couldn't hear the air pump for the suspension, couldn't detect any movement when changing between sport and comfort, dynamic was greyed out and I couldn't raise/lower the suspension whatsoever. The suspension options actually disappeared from the MMI when I went for the test drive but maybe that is normal behaviour?

I managed to get a sly Vagisil scan in without the trader having a clue and the results were hilarious. The car had already bleated about the self levelling system on the lights being on the fritz -

There is the possibility that a lot of those codes were historic and not cleared but the car reeked of the three previous owners being tightarses and I reckon the trader bought the car for peanuts.

DESPITE all of that, the car itself physically drove nicely, but nobody in their right mind should pick that car up for anything over a couple of grand IMO.

The 2.4 was a complete lemon from start to finish. Knew someone who had a 2.4 A4 Cab, they aways regretted it, swapped a while back for an A5 2.0 TFSI, so much faster!

Real shame to see a 61789 mile D3 4.2 V8 in quite that state.

I viewed an A4 six months ago that was parked similarly jammed against another vehicle. Not a great first impression is it!?
