Meh,

I sold my original GT3 as it wasn't fast enough and i didn't want to have to get the Manthey 3.9 litre conversion which was around £26 fitted and mapped with all the other supporting mods, plus another 9k for the inevitable suspension, brake and so on etc upgrades this would have also required.

But dayum if that aint a snip compared to what these boys are asking for that extra couple of cc's !!

lol

LOL

Yeah, if it had of been a whole 30 quid I might have taken them seriously ! lol

I like originals where poss, so had a Mk1 GT3, wicked on track as a toy and once fitted with suitable semi's and some geo tweaks it carried amazing corner speed, but compared to my GTR and track car it was positively pedestrian on the road and if you were shifting on a good cross country road the track orientated setup and limited suspension travel tried very hard indeed to fling you into the next postcode.

If I was wealthy I would have a GT3RS as a track car in a heartbeat, especially with the right mods done.

For road its very hard to beat the Japanese for sheer pace and thrust, again after the correct mods are applied.

You feel an old Ferrari is worth many millions compared to an Aventador ??

Or an R8 is better value ??

Or compared to a 20 year old tuned R32GTR with similar performance for the man on the street at one tenth the cost.

Where would you like the comparitive merit limits to be set bud ??

A caravan in a gypsy park is an abode, a palace to the man sleeping on a bench, a flea pit to a guy in a three bed semi, the guy who can afford that van just to be a taxi for when him and a couple of chums want to get lashed and not cram 6 people in the back of his bentley probably views a nice 5 bedroom townhouse how we view the caravan !!

I will inform Gulfstream that they are clearly mental for thinking they might sell a small plane for what they charge when Cessna obviously do just as good a job !!

:D

Recall Chris Harris saying the mk1 never felt that quick, and that the 996 gen 2 was a much faster and overall more complete machine

With the greatest respect to Mr Harris and your own paraphrasing, I doubt that many people would class the difference as "much faster" !! :beerchug: The feeling of speed is as much to do with the softer approach of the Mk2 making the speed more noticeable, compared to the Mk1 beating on you immediately making the speed feel less obvious.

I totally agree that there is definitely a noticeable difference in feel and impression of speed and this translates into a miniscule amount on a stopwatch, on the road the standard GT3 Mk2 is actually softer and slower handling thanks to Porsche making a definite setup change to allow for the initial popularity coming against average joe (particularly our friends across the pond :bigwave: ) finding the original car intimidating :D :D you can actually get both versions almost identical with setup (and a couple of bushes swapped on a Mk1) and on track you would be hard pushed to notice much between the two models. But that wasn't what I meant by "I sold it cos it wasn't fast enough" - I mean it was MASSIVELY slower to my other three cars at the time - a tarmac specced Evo4 and a 600bhp R34GTR which could do over 200mph and hit 100 in 7seconds and a track car with over 450bhp/ton !! Most cars feel flat compared to that lol and the Porsche would have just been reduced to posing and trackdays and I was not wealthy enough to do that and have no interest in posing (Im too big boned for Speedo's :D).

This may help if considering GT3's....

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topi ... +Mk2&mid=0

.....very good opinions from real owners and drivers (Steve Rance in particular) as well as some rubbish as usual with PH.

Hope that helps.

Great comments Bladerider - and great PH thread. :beerchug:

I've been to a few Sunday Service meets and there's always a couple of 996 GT3s, both gen 1 and 2, and they always look gorgeous. I've never been in one, but have been fascinated by them ever since evos original press launch (Zanzibar red, a brace of them blasting the press mini buses on the Autobahn at 187 mph) and them dominating ecoty for years to come etc. I can't explain why but I still prefer the 996s to the 997. The 996 gen 1 came without traction control or air con FFS - now that is a proper car!

Must admit if I came into some money I'd always thought I'd take the time to hunt down a 996 GT3 before all the good ones are gone forever. Even in the last two years noticeably fewer are listed now in the PH classified, more and more have been modified or abused or tracked hard etc

Speed wise I imagine they feel quick insolation due to the lack of weight. Went in a 964 C4 the other day and it still felt quick with 250 bhp! I remember going in a 997 gen 2 Carrera S around 2009 or 2010 when they were fairly new and being absolutely gobsmacked how fast it was. I just wasn't expecting it to be as quick as it was. Silly (and naive) really - it has more power and torque than either 996 GT3 and only a touch more weight. God knows what a 997 gen 2 RS or 4.0 feels like - they must be ballistic

997GT3 is a somewhat strange thing

You get the impression - as with a few Porkers - that they could have done more but didn't bother/want to/feel the need yet/use up any spare etc !!! The 996GT3RS is a true race car with number plates and is significantly more focused towards the track making it virtually unuseable at anything other than speed limits+20% typically, its just too violent in exactly the same way as my track car is, which I have taken on the road, slowly, hating every moment !!! Fine on a smooth motorway (if there are any left these days) but theres no point just doing Vmax everywhere, and any decent car can get to where it needs to be in under 20seconds where thats concerned in the real world.

The 997RS is a car I have only been in once, was hugely impressed at how easy it had all become right on the limit or at least as close as i feel comfortable in the pasenger seat even with a good driver next to me, in fairness I dont know how anyone can put up with being a passenger with me in my cars and my hat is firmly off to them !! lolol The trouble is that it requires a certain softness (like the 996Mk2) to make it friendly and this also means it can accommodate everyday use up to a point if you desire, which is not really the case with the original RS and hence tells you everything you need to know I guess. They are all different shades of the same colour, right at the epic end of the pallette, with great build quality, surprisingly cheap costs considering what they can and do allow you to do, repeatedly, without fuss or breakdowns, and as such are one of the true "must have" experiences in my opinion and if you are wealthy enough a "must keep" track toy and maybe twice a year to a PCUK meet up, assuming you own a tweed jacket with leather elbows !! lol

But none of them are more than "quick" lol :D :D a bit like the RS4 is only "swift" hehehe !!!!

Get one soon - and if its a Zanzibar with under 50k keep it forever, I still wish I had bought the Zanzy I first fell in love with instead of waiting a couple of years to buy a boring silver one.

Pipedream for me I'm afraid! Hopefully the 996s out there are in enthusiasts hands and are looked after for years to come, cannot remember the last time I saw one on the road apart from at a Pistonheads meet!
