The "risk to other drivers" ... Although I cant condone doing speeds like this on UK roads and I drive a lowly RS6 incapable of speeds above 71mph so have no real means to comment ....... I dont get the (A) "sensationalist" BBC report re risk to other drivers or (B) the coppers "ill informed" comment re risk other drivers ... it was 5am on a motorway in summer, looking like a dry sunny day .. with perfect conditions ... and with no one around ...

How can they clock a precise speed from a helicopter?
Yes its illegal and he's lucky not have served time, but I agree there is a time and a place, and this is possibly what kept him out of prison

If he'd of had a quick squirt to 165 then its easily 'getawayable' (if there is such a word), but obviously there was a sustained average speed of well over the speed limit, thus attracting the eyes of the motorway network cameras, who which I'm sure reported it.
I'm sure there were instances where there was other traffic about, they could have edited the video showing that, they just chose to (as you say) sensationalise the story by showing the stretches where he really went for it.

Police helicopters have Doppler radar. Very accurate. Don't even go there.

While the bloke is obviously a scumbag based on the info given in the link above, I would have had NO QUALMS whatsoever about doing those speeds at 5AM on a summer SUNDAY MORNING on a very empty road. I have done higher on a number of occasions, all on private local runways of course and lived to tell the tales.......

Agreed Nick. I wrote a similar initial reply the other day but wussed out and deleted it before posting.
The highest speed I've ever personally driven was 2:30am on a Sunday morning in May, pre planned, summer wheels just back on, hence tyres free from nails and stones, pressures double checked, wheel nuts triple checked, nine mile laser straight fully lit multi lane road, did a recce on cruise to check the carriageway was clear, no police cars on hard shoulder etc.
This was on the Autobahn in Germany obviously!

Nice. Bet it's the only one in the country.
Similar to the green 5 series Central Police had. Stuck out like a sore thumb.
