Hope mods can move this to a sticky or move it to a prominent area in the forum.
As most of you will be aware recently i had a break in, keys stolen and my car taken whilst me and the family were in the house - i'm not the first and i most certainly won't be the last, but we can try to prevent these things happening.

Everyone no matter what you are driving may end up on these fuckers radar so i feel we need a sticky to help inform each other of ways to tackle this ever growing issue.

Other advice would be to join your local police-force Facebook site or have a quick google for car crime in your area.

Not sure what security measures we can install on our vehicles or homes other than the usual but hey maybe some of you engineering boffins may be able to develop something new.

my mate had exactly the same thing happen to him i wiltshire area thieving scums!!! trouble is if you woke up theres a good chance you could get hurt or worse by these mindless thugs!!! we need some kind of solution!!

we've a device fitted to ours, you SMS the sim card in the card and it kills total power to the engine.
Nice to think you can stop the car, downside being if not used immediately, where would the scumbags be driving when you kill the engine..outside a school?
It also allows you to lock, unlock do windows etc.

Any details on how to get this? Cost etc? The idea of remotely disabling the car is appealing but I'd worry about it being disabled in the middle of the road in the middle of nowhere.

ours was already on the car when we brought it, but i've since contacted the manufacturer, they were called argus security, the model ref was KS990, think it's classed as a gsm text pager, don;t know costs but when i was looking into finding the manufacturer, costs were around the £100 mark.

We've looked at building these as part of a tracker type option. If the manufacturer allows disabling in motion then I wouldn't even consider it.
The legalities are quite clear - if somebody nicks the car, you disable it remotely and they crash then you will be in serious jeopardy of prosecution. If anybody get killed this would be a manslaughter charge. No if ands or buts and almost impossible to defend against.
The proper ones should only disable when the car next comes to a standstill.

Ahh - I see. Cunning. The manufacturer are completely distancing themselves from the issue but not saying you could disable the car. Just simply 'three remote switchable feeds'. So you *could* wire this into the ignition but its down to the installer.

I would strongly advise anybody using such a system wire it into the starter relay system (eg starter switch or clutch switch). That way the remote immobilisation will cut in when the car is switched off - unlikely they will be able to restart it.

Could you also wire one of the outputs into one of the engine sensors so that the engine management goes into "limp mode" - which would "encourage" the thieves to think they've stolen a duffer and dump it ASAP?

Same issues - yes it will work but remotely stopping the engine carries potential legal issues that seriously need to be considered. Even remotely starting has pitfalls - there is serif laws against leaving a car with the engine running (highway code 123, section 98 & 107 road traffic act).
if it doesn't use a speed reference (either from a car sensor, can-bus or GPS) then it's really not worth it unless you are happy splicing into the starting mechanism.
I guess the one thing you could do is plumb into the low pressure fuel pump feed. It's lifts the fuel of the tank to the high pressure fuel line. I've never tried it but it would be interesting to see how long the car will run with only what's left in the high pressure pump.
You could also splice into throttle pedal sensors. So the car runs but only on idle so still have 'control'. Still a bit dodgy if the power is cut on the motorway.

I live in not such a lovely area of London and have a key fob that means that whoever has the key has to know the code before it will start, I have the keyless go/start option and whilst I miss it, its nice to have a bit of confidence that that car should be there in the morning. I've tried to attach the photo of it but it may not have uploaded. Cost £100 fitted.

Thanks for the info buddy. Interesting stuff and yes all food for thought. IMO the remote start is a "cool" feature to have rather than a necessity. I was speaking to my son about this and he said that's a cool feature, but I take on board the highway code bit....a bit like we all do when observing the speed limit Im waiting for the company that are selling the kit I posted the link from to get back to me with a cost, however if Turborevs can do a group deal count me in
