No, but I remember the epic battles with the Ford RS's in the early 80's - especially in the snow and ice of the Swedish rally - they were great days!

Good thing they didn't use a replica during those epic battles. I find it very hard to take anything on Top Gear seriously, it's just so heavily scripted and they ham it up way too hard. It's gone beyond glib and I'm sick of their let's-buy-old-cars-and-stupidly-modify-them-to-do-things-they-were-never-designed-to-do tasks. I just want Clarkson to review cars and force his opinion on us about anything stupid in the world, he's at his funniest when doing just that. James and Hamster are just fluffers hanging out on a car porn set. I hate it, and I hate myself for still watching it… and liking it a little bit.

Sod the livery (which is admittedly nice) - just the 917 has me tingling. What a machine. Scary to think the front brakes were the same as a road-going 70's 930!

Yeah, I read a crapload about the 917 a couple of months ago, after finding a very cool old article in *ahem* a gentlemen's magazine about the Can-Am and their 1200BHP monsters. I knew about the Can-Am but this was written a long time ago and shed a different light on the event. Anyways, the 917 featured heavily and sounded amazing until I figured out it was built in the late sixties!?! Astonished is an understatement.
Some standout points IIRC:
260ish cu flat 12!!
Gas filled (for crack detection) spaceframe weighing under a 100lbs
Ti and Mg engine internals
And it was undrivable, it took the Gulf team a year to rework it. Then it dominated for like 5 years. Teh last version was credited as killing the Cam-Am event.

These figures off Wiki:
The 917/30 was the most powerful sports car racer ever built and raced. The 5.374 litre 12 cylinder (90.0 x 70.4 mm) twin-turbocharged engine could produce 1,580 bhp (1,180 kW) in qualifying tune, with twin turbochargers run up to full boost, a simply astonishing 39 psi (2.7 bar), though it usually raced with around 1,100 bhp (820 kW) at 7,800 rpm to preserve the engine. Whilst weighing only in at 1800 lb (816 kg), giving it a power to weight of 1967.36 bhp/tonne in qualifying tune and 1369.68 bhp/tonne in race tune. The 917/30 dominated the Can-Am series during the 1973 season. The 917/30 could go from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, 0-200 mph (320 km/h) in 10.9 seconds, and on to a top speed of more than 260 mph (420 km/h). These staggering levels of performance, the attendant fuel consumption of the engines, and ever increasing risk, has led to the 917/30 sometimes being cited as the car that killed Can-Am racing.

Brilliant machine, eh?

I think the Aston is the winner by a mile. It looks like a right beast. They even did a road version the James May drove on top gear (naked)
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!
