They are putting them up on the variable speed limit stretch of the M42. I can't see it being long before the M6 has them on the new variable limit stretch up by Jun 4 or 5 onwards. They have them around the Dartford tunnel / crossing section of the M25 too.

I've also heard from colleagues 'in the know' that they are actually set to trip at any speed above 70mph. The whole '10% + 3' thing doesn't exist with these things.
That would be going from one extreme to the other!!

My understanding was that the M25 cameras are only live when 60, 50, 40 etc 'variable' limits are displayed. However, they WILL trigger above 100 when 70 NSL is displayed (or not displayed if that makes sense - ie. gantry variable limits not in use)

If this is actually true, SuprSi was very unfortunate indeed

No, not true about when set to NSL, I've barreled through them at 1.5 tonne. Nothingness.

The normal gantry cameras are 'turned on' when the gantry is illuminated with the variable speed limit. The new HADECS3 cameras are on all the time. Like I say, work colleagues have told me that they are set to trip at 70mph - I can only pass on what I've been told.
CURRENT: Montecarlo Blue Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifolglio, 2.9ltr bi-turbo, 510bhp
PREVIOUS: Volvo V60 Polestar, build number 149/700 worldwide - 3ltr straight 6 turbo. 350bhp remapped to 400bhp. Only one of 120 in the UK
PREVIOUS: Misano red B7 saloon, stage 2 map to 425bhp, manifold flap delete, KW V3 coilovers.

This is a useful thread (albeit as Si's expense) as I was unaware of this new type.

Id be surprised if they were bang on 70. The whole reason the 5-0 allow leeway is because speedos are notoriously inaccurate and a decent brief could prove your car was +- out and it wasnt their clients fault. Adding 10% gives a net above that. "+3" depends on the local force, i.e don't count on the extra. I was nicked in portsmouth by a front facing at 34 mph, cnuts.

All the variable cameras between junction 3a (M40)to junction 8(M6) were switched on last year. A few people I know have been done by them. And I do believe the cameras are working along the M6 between junction 5 (spaghetti junction)to 10a (M54) I've personally seen them flashing on the opposite carriage way.

The problem with fixed cameras is they're lack of emotion.

6 years ago I got 3 points and £60 fine for 109mph. Mostly because the copper who caught me was a human who you could talk to.
Image

I feel your pain - I've had 20+ points in my driving career and not always from driving inappropriately - the draconian limit introduced 10+ years before I was born is so outdated it's unreal. Similar to highway code braking distances measured in the 60's in a Ford Anglia...

I have nothing to add to the thread other than my condolences really. I had a real scare on a motorway beginning of June (travelling significantly faster) and looked back to see a gantry camera in the mirror. Luckily nothing came of it but it's a sickening feeling.

I have heard (from a Siemens engineer working on the project) that all SPECS cameras will be linked together into a national network in due course - meaning speeding, anywhere, will become a thing of the past. Without false/missing plates of course. And with less police on the road, that's going to be a more frequent occurrence I suspect. :(

This has turned into quite an interesting thread. I might have missed some posts so I'll have a proper look later. Cheers.

If that does become reality, it starts to make those noddy Google cars an attractive option to getting about without risking boredom at the wheel or racking up the points.

Out of interest - if you contest the ticket under grounds that you believe the camera wasnt working etc... and things ultimately go against you, are you faced with a stiffer penalty?

i have 2 houses in this area, one by jct 5 and the other by jct 7 so drive this route all the time, 2-3 return journeys a week

ive seen the cameras go off many times however it seems 80-85mph on the speedo is a safe number as ive not been done at those speeds. however I also know where they are so usual slow to 75-80 for them then boot it afterwards. they don't seem to be average as I haven't been done including a blast in the C6 to 18X very early one Saturday morning.

You can get increased court costs if they deem you wasting time but that's what the ATF insurance is for.

Andy's speed was the sort of speed i went through one last month wherever the hell I was 'oop norf'. 1.8 something. I *think* they don't trigger above 1.5 but I really didn't want to be the one to find out I was wrong the hard way...

M54 is Wolverhampton Telford to Shrewsbury? Dead straight but rough tarmac I recall!

If the camera worked at that speed you'd have made the news hehe
