RE: 993 turbo
the 993 and 996's are very nice cars, but alot more common around where I live, as well as GT3's and a couple of GT2'S. s

You won't get much change out of £40k for a decent one of these Jules.

RE: 993 turbo
I have driven many 993 including turbos, I prefer to own the factory lightweight 993 versions, so the Turbo is not for me. I would be cautious of buying though as you need to buy well, I have known cars coming way under the standard 408 bhp output, this has resulted in a top end and Turbos no change out of £10k..so inspection and rolling road to confirm output is a must before handing over any ££££.
From '95-97 there was an X50 performance option of an aditional oil cooler and upgarded chip on the standard K16 turbos giving 430bhp, for '97-98 the X50 as used in the Turbo S had the larger K24 turbo and gave 450bhp as standard, easily tuned and having driven a couple of 500bhp versons they really fly, they do struggle against the 996 version though above 180mph as the steeper 993 windscreen hinders progress due to aerodynamics..... 996 is more of an everyday car and 993 version more of an event every time you go out in it, depnds what you want/need from it?
Sorry, saw you original question about max power....as Porsche went to 430 on standard k16's, ou know this safe,,,but realistically you annot get more then 445-450 out of the K16......anything above and you are likely to be going for the K24's sooner than anticipated.
Andy fearns at Fearnsport silverstone, knows all about these, he has rebuilt a few 993 Gt2/RS lumps for mates....sorry if I appear a total Porsche bore, I have owned a nice B5 S4 as a daily driver for the last 3 years

I have a 993 C2, couldn't afford the TT at the time...DavidT wrote:I think the 993tt is the classic 911. Good power & brakes, fairly light by modern standards. It will last for ever too. I have no idea what they handle like though, its one of those cars that just seems right
Steph
I have done a few track days with other owners who have /had 993TTs, driven most of theirs, and I used to be a regular visitor to one of the largest porsche forums at the time (p-car.com).
They handle surprisingly well, if a little tail heavy, but much better than the earlier 911Sc and 964s.
They are not fully bullet proof. The bodywork is great, but they do suffer a few problems.
Suspension is infinitely adjustable, and can need to be adjusted occasionally (especially as the miles go up, though new bushes helps). This presents a problem as the bolts tend to seize.
The TT can suffer from hydraulic lifter failure, usually as a result of being driven hard then immediately parked, so the turbos make the engine bay real hot. Also all the oil drains out of the heads when left for a while (they are dry sumped, as all 911s are, but it seems to affect the TTs more).
Other funnies like the sunroof can give problems, but nothing too expensive. Some of the servicing is a bit pricey due to the layout of the engine. For example, to change some of the spark plugs (2 per cylinder) you need to remove the exhaust silencers. Same is true on the normally aspirated 993s, but there's less plumbing in the way so an easier job.
You can do most work yourself if you have the time and the inclination.
The RS4 is faster point to point, but if I had the money I'd still love a 993TT too.
I've had my C2 for 7 years now, and keep saying I'm going to sell it, but it still remains in the garage as the 'just one last drive' makes me change my mind
It never fails to put a smile on my face when I drive it.
Hope that helps

depends on what you want to do.quattrosteph wrote:Thanks guys for your informationsIs a 440/450 bhp RS4 B5 is quicker and handle better than a 993 turbo?
Both of them have soft suspension for road use, which can be improved by better springs/dampers.
On a track, standard cars, the 993TT will outhandle the RS4, certainly outbrake it, and would be slightly quicker.
To be honest though, the difference between the two is easily made up by the ability of a good driver.
A stage 3 RS4 (456bhp) is not significantly quicker than a standard 380bhp car. Sure it may feel like it is, and gives more of a turbo boost kick, but real world, the difference is maybe 3 or 4 cars lengths for a lap of Spa. As I say, its about the whole package - tyres, brakes, suspension, and most importantly the driver, and how agressive/smooth they drive.
A decent set of stoppers / tyres will easily make up this difference.
The RS4 feels heavy by comparison with the 993. Put some decent suspension and brakes on the RS4, and it levels the playing field, but you still don't get the same feeling.
I will say that the 993 does feel dated when compared to the 996, but then I like its interior. Its not to everybody's taste though.
I love my RS4, which for the record has uprated brakes but not suspension / chipped. Point to point across A and B roads the RS4 is quicker (or more correctly, is easier to drive quicker, especially if the roads are - err - lively/bumpy). The 993TT though is more involving and gives - to me anyway - a better driving experience.
If I could only have one, and IF I didn't need 4 seats or the load lugging ability of the RS4, OR if I could afford to run a second cheapo car to fill this need, I'd have the porker (I've done the latter for a number of years).
When I asked this question of myself in 2000 when the RS4 came out, I brought the 993.
Ask the guys who have moved on from RS4s to say 996GT3s what their views are.
Hope that helps

RE: Porsche 993 tt
I loved both the Porsches I had, but especially the 996 Cup - looks, acceleration, noise...... but when it came down to it, trying to get the max enjoyment out of a car, on the extreme, my RS4 won hands down every time. I always had a feeling that the 996 was a better car than I was a driver, and could snap back at any time, and that for me took the fun out of it. With Noggy I could take her to the limit and still feel safe at 'silly' speeds.
Had the chance of a 964RS a while back (even wilder than the Cup), I absolutely love these, but my experience in the 996 put me off..... that's why I have to do the RS4 thing again, but a bit better this time me thinks
Cheers,
Andiroo
