Couldn't agree more. If the law can't stop it, perhaps its time to sort things out ourselves.

Over the last 6 years, I have had no claims but every year the cost of my insurance goes up, due to car crime, and the law does nothing about it.

I intentionally register my car to work, and not to my home address to help reduce people finding my home address.

I always leave the spare set of keys at work, and not at home, so if the house is broken into, they wont get the keys.

I'm about to do a house renovation, and I’ll be installing a hidden safe in the concrete slab for keys and other sundry.

Lockup garage now a must for the house plans.

Film on the car windows now a must.

When we do our work commercial building extension, we'll now be putting up a perimeter fence to stop people cruising accross the property. Font entrance in and out only. Plus Security camera's, including 1x specially targeted at licences plates comin through the only main drive. (Cant stop them, but may help to catch them)

Separate kill switches are a great idea. Simple, cheap, and effective.

I think we can all learn allot from South Africa. They have huge!! Amounts of theft, home invasion, and car jacking. Only that the crimes there shoot 1st, and don’t care about the concept of life. They have some cool tricks and techniques to reduce the chance. Flame throwers on the side of your car for a starter, pepper spray fittings to disperse unwanted persons, number plates that fall off the car with special messages underneath like "im hijacked or stolen" underneath, or more importantly, if faced with this [censored], not stop. Drive, hit them if you need too, but its their issue then. (Just don’t mistake them for granny waiving at you!)

The alternative is to sell the car and use public transport. immm, maybe not. Maybe accept the fact this is part of life today, dont let it stop you from enjoying your cars, but simply be sensible. And if you see [censored] happen to other people, stand up and do something about it (without getting hurt of course).

Sorry to hear about that. I had a mate, parked his RS4 in Porirua and V1 gone in 60 seconds so to speak. Seems in NZ there is a healthy resellers market. There is an under the bonnet kit. My mate went for a different detector under the bonnet...problem gone.

I've considered that. But they're simply not as good as the visor mounted options. I'm looking at how I can conceal it further with a tint band accross the top of the window, and maybe even a "garage door opener" cover for the V1 itself. There is also a number of kits avalable for the V1 remote console, to intergrate it more into the dash. TBA.. I'm working on the plan.

No one use to know what a valentine One was a few years ago. But now every euro car and boy racer has one or wants one. Just wait until they catch onto the Blinder Laser Jammers. Those'll get nicked next.

South Africa does seem to be a very scary place if you're in a half decent car. I don't understand this new culture that seems to be hitting the UK, where taking a life isn't that big a deal, and everybody's so competitive. That ranges from people bitching because someone drives a heap of dump car, to pikeys (not PhilT pikeys, but PROPER ones) who are currently nicking women's cars at petrol stations, sometimes with the woman still in it. I have no tolerance for such people, and I am certainly a harsh git towards anyone I believe to think like that. Hence my love and respect for people who don't let it happen. I've heard many stories of hikackings of cars, where some chap steps out in front of you with a gun or whatever, you stop, he shouts a lot, you get out, he gets in, car's gone. Bugger that matey, if someone steps out in front of you with a gun, floor it, head straight at him, and for Christ's sake duck behind the steering wheel or into the passenger seat. It's a sad fact that we're getting to a point where even I, a 19 year old student in a £600 car sometimes feel that I would be safer if I had a baseball bat etc in the car.

Blimey, that was a bit of a big post! I think I'll leave it there!

Kiwi,

The WORST you can get is a violent confrontation with a risk to yourself and your loved ones, and the stakes are high due to the electronic-based keys who become the sine-qua-non step to start the car.

- If you want protection against Smash and Grab or car-jacking by breaking the window : FILMS

- If you want overall protection when driving/entering/exiting your car : a GUARD/DEFENSE DOG
(works as well for home-jacking)

All the rest (switch/keycards/code/wheel-locks/tracker/immobilizer) are NOT deterrents, just "eventually", and AFTER the confrontation for your keys happened, an additional layer of protection or to recover the car. But the most painful part would have happened already.

Last : for those who suggested it, sleeping with your keys under the pillow is not the best idea. Think about the trauma for you and your partner after you got awaken in your bed in the middle of the night by a bunch of thugs. How long will that take to forget and sleep peacefully again.
Better to leave them next to the door so they go in and out asap, or let the dog handled them.
And let the insurance do what they're paid for.

Just my two cents

Kiwi, can you let me know about the films you have decided on?
Eric, a dog will stop the opportunist thief only. I had some visitors from Rumania last week, one of them had a giant Schnauser. It was trained to let people in but grab them by their feet if they wanted to leave. If you stayed still than it was just holding, but trying to move resulted in stronger and stronger grip..... Anyway, they have burglured his house after taking care of the dog first. It did not die but is staying away from the front yard ever since.
My wife has lost her mobile phone with a smash and grab, after she has left it in her car for about 5 minutes. Apart from being careful and not leaving goods in site, there is not a lot one can do.
I do like the APR anti theft system though. Bummer, it is not available for the RS4.

I 1st looked at the TOAD (UK Product) Secu-film, but after looking into it, there appears to be a large array of choice. I would assume it’s probably all the same product anyway. Essentially it’s 7 times thicker than standard tint, with 3x the glue. It comes in clear, 1/2 tint, and full (max legal) tint.

It won’t stop a thief, but will delay or deter them.

Also potentially handy in hijacking scenarios I suppose too. Not that we have many of those, but it does happen.

I've got a quote for NZ$320 for both sides in clear tint. They can’t do the rear in the tough stuff, as it’s too thick to evenly go across the heated lines, and looks like crap apparently. They also quoted me NZ$380 for tinted, and they would use std tint on the rears to colour match to the tough tint on the side.

The quote I got came from SOLACE which is an AU company anyway i think. The product is called "Ultratough". But i'm sure allot of the tinters can do this product ?? Naturally fitting quality is very important.

Good luck !

i put window tint on my rs4 and apparently its got some type of material that stops the glass from breaking apart and thus hard to enter the car.

That be the glue and the plastic itself. Car windows are generally made of toughened glass, which is pretty solid stuff, but when it breaks it shatters into 271 gazillion pieces, so the bits are so small they don't cut you (although they still do and it bloody hurts!). Having this tint on your windows basically means you have a sheet of plastic over the top, held on by glue. The plastic takes most of the sh1t, but then if the window does break, the glue holds it all together on the piece of plastic. Good idea really, unless for whatever reason you need to break into or out of the car!

They are legal alright. Thank god, else i would have kissed goodbuy to my licences ALONG time ago. A V1 plus a Good Laser Jammer is essential.
