All petrol cars and most diesel cars have them in the throttle body but they don't really like make any noise you would be able to hear over a running engine. Maybe that person is on about the flap some cars (rs4 for example) have in the air box, but that's vacuum operated and I believe doesn't make any noise either.. And the '6 doesn't have one. I'm 99% sure it's the variable valve timing actuators.
Mine is very high mileage though so in my case I was thinking it could be the cam chain tensioners. (although these engines have cam belts, the two cams are linked with chains)
