I worked for Vauxhall when this come out and mate had one too. That all alloy Saab 2.2 is a great engine, better than any 'K' series! Both versions seemed compromised to me. Go for the VX and tweek brakes and suspension. Or get an elise with a knackered engine (shouldn't be hard) and drop a VW 1.8t lump out of a Mk4 Golf or Audi TT. There is a kit. If you want outright power get the K04 turbo'd TT lump (225 standard 270 mapped), Golf/TT AGU lump with the K03 (150 standard, 210 mapped by R-Tech), not much lag on K03 but get it mapped.
Mark.
VX220 trackcar?
Re: VX220 trackcar?
The 2.2 was nice but it was strangled buthe extra weight of the vx over the Elise.
There is absolutely nothin wrong with the k series engine. The revisions for the s2 made things very reliable (replacing cork head gasket with steel for a start). The limits are getting more than 170ps is expensive and reliability can be an issue over about 220. For the record I never had any problems with higher output.
Those audi figures largely out of date - most conversions moved to the newer engines and most audi setups comfortably putting out 330-350 bhp. Some bonkers people go mad and 500+ is perfectly doable for reasonable costs.
Just remember the short wheelbase of the Elise means big torque can be... Entertaining... My personal (and it really is just personal) opinion is that I like the high revving Honda versions. The n/a is what the Elise should have been from the start and is a great balance with 220ps.
