Decision Time

Post by bobjebb » Tue Apr 26, 2005 9:41 pm

I've had 10 VERY happy months with my RS4. But it's that awkward time when £'s are going to have to be spent.

Exyended Warranty circa 1k
Cambelt service circa 1k
Tyres circa 1k

I'm also looking at stage 1&2 mods, circa 3k

OR... Do I swap her for an RS6?

Just thinking aloud really, but if any of you can make a decision for me I'd appreciate it. Suppose it all depends what I would be offered in P/X, but I have 15k max to add to the deal...

I'm at that stage myself now and decided to try and sell. I could do with a little extra money for my new house.

just done cambelt, service and tyres but the car won't sell without doing these anyway so they had to be done

RS6 never really appealed to me - not quite ready for barge features and auto box yet.. :)

Just be careful with the RS6 depreciation. despite what people are saying, the RS4 market looks to be quite buoyant at the moment despite higher mileage cars appearing at lower prices. I wonder if the RS6 market will have similar characteristics or worse?

Good luck with the sale... I'm under no illusions that a 6 would depreciate more heavily than a 4, but they've obviously taken a real bashing from new and that's appealing!

Is the general concensus that a modded RS4 (presuming work has been done by one of the recognised outfits) are worth more, or do mods tend to have a negative effect on resale?
thanks

Thanks Bob.

well I wouldn't necessarily be put off by a tuned car but I'd have to be satisfied it has been properly cared for and well maintained, and would pay more for a tuned one. I can however see how people can be scared off tuned cars and I do agree the consensus is not to buy tuned cars.

In fact, I'm downgrading (if I can say that! :)) to an S3 and the more tuned the better...

Bob
Where the f**k are you buying your tyres if they are costing a grand? Set of standard sized Pilot sports inc vat were £570, 19" conti sports were just over 600

Add to that a cam belt incl water pump is around 400 quid from QST. I know this price doesn't include the standard service, but put together they'd still be less than 700 quid.

I think youre trying to talk up the expenses to help you justify the RS6 :bigblink: :biggrin2:

Personally I would buy an unmodded car. If it had brakes or suspension I'd not worry too much, but tuning mods always make me wary. In hindsight I would now consider a stage 1/2/3 car but as already said by others would have to be very sure of who did the mods. I guess a good history and a pre purchase inspection would help.
As for adding value, I don't believe the mods do add any value. All they do is make the car less desireable to some people and more desireable to others.

I personally don't see the benefit in changing it for an RS6, unless you need the extra space. The RS4 will always have more charachter than an RS6, is as quick (if not quicker), and will hold value better. Ok, the age might be a factor, but it'll cost you more to trade for an RS6, and you'll have to do it again in another year or so when you're in the same position with the 6...

(and the RS6 just doesn't have the road presence of the RS4 IMHO)

Just my thoughts..

As others have said, Bob - you can save a bit of money getting the cambelt replaced at specialists. I used to think that the cambelt had to be done at Audi dealers for warranty purposes but in fact you can get the additional work like cambelts/fluid changes anywhere as long as they use original parts.

Simple, that is a very good price on the tyres indeed. All the dealers I rang quoted circa £200 for the Michelins.

"Purdey Simpson and Feltch, Purveyors of fine tyres and rubber compound to the HRH The Queen" in Belgravia, London.

Useful info about the cambelt, however I'll have to use AMD as I've fallen out with QST.

Thanks for the info and saving me a fortune.

Although I'm looking at Oettinger stage 1 - £1250 +VAT

That's the most expensive stage 1 i've ever heard of ! - You might want to check Dog's recent posts with regards to Oettinger too (I think it was Oettinger anyway)...they apparently don't offer a seperate stage 3 map if you decide to go down the exhaust route later on...

Not as expensive as MTM at QST... £1300 +VAT

They do a 517 bhp package but that may just be in Germany, and will probably cost more than my house.
