Removing 'rounded off' hex bolts from steering wheel
Removing 'rounded off' hex bolts from steering wheel
Guys,
I have a MOMO 'Team' wheel from my new Elise that I am going to sell (280 mm) and buy the 300 mm one but someone has had a go at the bolts and they are rounded off (4 out of 6) so that an allen key or torx bolt can't turn them. Anyone had this issue? Either I MIG weld (not that I have that in my back pocket) or I could drill into them and use an 'easy out' tool but apart from that has anyone ever successfully done this themselves - is it a specialist job? They were rusted and were tightened to within an inch of their life!

Re: Removing 'rounded off' hex bolts from steering wheel
Are the heads flush or raised? If raised you could try filing a flat into them then unscrewing. Another option is to try a slightly larger torx bit?

They are flush unfortunately - I could drill the heads off, remove the wheel and then use pliers on whatever is left but I think it won't be much.

Use next size up Torx bit, line up with corners and tap in with hammer, tapping often loosens seized threads too

Where abouts are you Timdogg? I have some stuff on the van which is awesome for loosening stuck threads.

Done the same for the exact same problem before and has worked more often than not. I have also drilled the heads too and there was just enough to grab on too. Also, if the boss just has a rubber etc cover over it, once the steering wheel if off and you remove the cover, the underside of the bolts are usually fairly well exposed (normally only 3-4 support arms in the way in my experience), giving you various options to finish removal.redrsr wrote:+1Batfinnk wrote: Another option is to try a slightly larger torx bit?

Re: Removing 'rounded off' hex bolts from steering wheel
That's some great advice re. the torx bolt and taping it in - I'm going to try this, I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks!
