Non-retentive (mod-friendly) Insurance Companies?

Post by s4dave » Thu Sep 02, 2004 7:33 am

Plenty of people with modded cars on here... who do you use for insurance?

Are there any insurers with a half reasonable attitude toward upgrades?

Norwich Union ripped me over £60 just for changing my alloys:-

"How can you justify that?"
"The new wheels will make your car more desirable"
"Er, but it had nice alloys anyway and it's a group 20 car already"
"Yes, but it'll attract more attention with non-manufacturer alloys"
"It attracts more attention when I wax it! You gonna charge me for that too?"
"Er..."

Ugh, I feel a Victor Meldrew moment coming on, better calm down dear...

Problem is that NU is about the only company now that will underwrite modded cars.
You can try Adrian Flux 0870 8692202 or Lancaster 01480 484836
Stay clear of people like Chaucer or Zenith.

Or try Greenlight on 01277 263 030.

Ok with mods and you can buy trackday cover on an as-needed basis too.

Try Liverpool and Victoria - but you need to call them

NFU Mutual also handle modded cars. Let's face it, they are used to insuring farmers who have all sorts of machinery which sometimes has to go on the public road.

All my mods cost me less than 10% of premium. NFU Mutual only care about serious mods (although I haven't changed my wheels, I have no doubt that they wouldn't charge me anything if I did).

A warning however: Some companies (Elephant for example) will insure you for the extra risk implied by the mods, but not the modified components themselves!

H&R coilovers, AWE DTS, Porsche front brakes, Short-shifter, 18" RS4 replicas

I found Privilege, my current insurer, gave me the best quote when I started talking mods. I don't know if this was something to do with being an existing customer but I doubt it as they refused to price match on other quotes I got. Elephant weren't far off but see warning above.

Does anyone have a mod freindly insurer who also offers trackday cover ?

I did have this with Greenlight on the S4 but they will not insure the RS as it is over their
value limit.

I think Liverpool Victoria do Prawn but not if you take the cover over the web, you need to call them
