Post by rweir » Mon Jan 26, 2004 3:57 pm

I was hoping someone can help me. I need to get a Racing License. Who can help with maybe a website? Is there more than one type of racing license?

I have ordered "Go Racing" pack from the Motor Sports Association, I am hoping this will have all the info I will need to get started ???

Cheers,
Rich.

Most Circuits that have a school will be able to offer you an ARDS course...Oulton Park certainly can I would think.

contact your local motorsport club - they'll have the MSA application forms - your National class B is basically a medical & some hours driving (instructor lead these days I think). Either way, they'll be loads of people who've done it at the club

Would a racing licence make any difference to your normal car insurance?

Racing licences are issued by the RACMSA ...the RAC are the administers for licences.

To go circuit racing you will need a racing licence, which like all motorsport licences is issued by the Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association (MSA). To get the appropriate licence it is compulsory to complete a practical test called the Association of Racing Drivers Schools course (ARDS). It can be carried out at most of the top race circuits in the country and involves both a written and track driving test (with an instructor). If that sounds a bit daunting, fear not. The written test makes a great deal of sense and is there to make sure you understand things like the racing procedures, what all the marshals flags mean and why the Clerk of the Course should sometimes be called Sir! The track driving part is not where you try to prove to the instructor that Michael Schumacher should opt for early retirement, it is just for you to demonstrate that you can lap a circuit safely - your speed is not important, you will not be timed.

To register yourself for the ARDS course you must first write to the MSA for the Go Racing pack. This includes a great deal of information and a very useful introductory video. Also in the pack is a medical form that has to be signed by a doctor. All race licence applications have to be accompanied by a medical report and most family GPs are happy to complete these reports for a fee. The actual cost of the practical part of the ARDS course varies depending on which circuit you go to, but the total cost of the Go Racing pack, the track session at the circuit, the medical and your race licence will set you back about £270. You only have to complete the ARDS course once, but you will have to renew your MSA licence each year at a cost of £40, with a new medical required every two years.

To then race your need to be registered to a club eg. the BRSCC look at www.brscc.co.uk
A car that meets all the regs for the seris you choose.
I would recommend any one make series. Prices of cars differ and you often pay a premium for the winning cars which are driven by the better drivers and not always worth the premium.

If you want to just take your car on a track, then try a club day, costs are far less.

If you really want the best day, ever get in touch with cadwell park. There is not a better more challenging curcuit in the country, but very little room for mistakes.

Good Luck
