New Tinted Window Laws

Post by sash » Fri Feb 13, 2004 2:40 pm

Just looked into putting a light smoke tint on my s4. Heard good things about a company called Pentagon so contacted them to do it.

Anyway they called me and told me that a new law is being introduced or has been introduced where it is illegal to have the front windows tinted.
Has anyone heard about this and what do people who already have their fronts tinted do in light of this new legislation?

My boss got pulled in North Wales for having too heavy a tint on the front side windows of his Range Rover. He was handed a fixed penalty notice (£30) which he considered harsh as the law has only changed recently.

Strangely the visors of a motorbike helmet can legally carry a heavy tint but not on cars.

Actually no they can't (unless they've changed the law recently) I got pulled loads of times for black visors.

That's exactly what my boss said - seems he has a pathological hatred of motorists.

Perhaps I didn't phrase it properly. I believe that the tint can be 70% on a visor and 35% on a car side window or that's what I thought.

Or have it got it wrong?

legal visors for bikes is only a very slight tint, sorry dont know % but it's not that dark as I have one for my helmet. No law about wearing very dark shades though.

Did hear sometime back about them trying to stop the use of sunglasses with blue lenses, apparenlty wearing these makes the colour red not stand out very well, traffic lights I suppose.

I believe it relates more to brake lights. For instance when you come round a corner and see bright brake lights as someone's nailing the brakes in the distance. With blue lenses if you're not actually looking directly at the car in question it can look like oncoming headlights. It's difficult to explain, and it sounds stupid, but trust me, at times it can catch you out!.

I once had a light hearted argument with a bike copper about the legality of my gold iridium visor when I suggested it wasn't 'tinted' at all but was 'coloured' and therefore completely legal

He did not agree with the validity of the argument but agreed it was a daft law and let it go.

He did however nick me for the stupidly loud race can I had on at the time which he tested at 112db's

This new law is all about the amount of light getting thru the windows and into the drivers eyes.
Really dont think they thought this law thru very well.
As someone said earlier what if someone is wearing shades??
May just bite the bullet and get the light tints, i think they only stop 35% light anyway.
He would have to be one mean or bored coppa to pull you for a light smoke tint especially if it is thatcham approved.
