Audi coupe questions

I've been attracted to the look and shape of the audi coupes for sometime now and since I'm looking for a second car to have fun in I thought I'd find out a bit about them to see if its where I wanna go.

Obviously an S2 would b the perfect option but with a limited budget I'm curious at what I can get for limited funds.

Ok, so what engine/transmission configurations do they come in and how rare are quattro versions?
Ultimately I'm looking for a rear wheel drive car for drifting/drag racing and want to know how workable one would be.

Hi, for a start, no Audi coupe (or any Audi for as long as I can remember) have ever had rear wheel drive.



I've had an S2 (Avant) and can confirm that they are great cars!

Your choice extends to a 2.0 8v (115bhp) which is a bit lethargic by todays standards. A 2.0 16v (140bhp) available as a quattro. A 2.6 V6 (150bhp) only as front wheel drive. A 2.8 V6 (174bhp) quattro only and of course the S2 (220-230bhp) quattro only. Auto boxes are very rare but available on most I think except the S2, probably the 2.6 most common - possibly.

The ones with the older nose (up to 1991 there were no V6's)) also had a 2.2 -2.3 5 cylinder with 136 bhp available as a quattro and a 2.3 20v 171bhp (without a turbo - lovely engine) available as a quattro. All 5 cyliders sound lovely and can do seriously high mileages. You can get these for next to nothing now. Galvalised body's on all cars but you do get rust on the front wheel arches where stones have penetraited the galvanising.

Unless you seriously tune a S2 (power slides), there won't be any drifting with these!!!!!
A very good S2 can be had from £3k - £5k, ones needing a little tlc can be had from as little as £2K. The 5 cylinder 20v in these are seriously strong and virtually bullit proof. V6's are a bit softer. 4Cylinders also very strong.

I had a Coupe Quattro for several years, a non-turbo B3. It was a fabulous car. Fine road manners, it looked good and, although it wasn't quick off the mark, because of the four wheel drive you could maintain very high cross country speeds.

Worth thinking about.

I sold mine three years ago for £1750 and three months later the lad who bought it wrote and thanked me and said what a smashing car it was!

I've had the 2.0 16v and that was great fun - well built and never gave me any problems...

Very informative cheers Norrs... Its the Quattro I'm really lookin at n wasn't sure if there were more than just the S2's that were available.
do the front cv/drive shafts form part of the seal for the gearbox? i.e is there a way to turn a quattro into a rwd without changing the gearbox?
From experience I know most cases this cannot be done, just curious if the coupes are an exception? occasionally u find a car where the front cv shafts bolt on, others slide thru a seal and locate on an internal spline forming the seal around the shaft

do the front cv/drive shafts form part of the seal for the gearbox? i.e is there a way to turn a quattro into a rwd without changing the gearbox?

I'm no technical whizzkid, but I would think it's almost impossible to make a quattro RWD only with the same gearbox/diff arrangement. Also, there is a Torsion Diff between front and back that shifts power to either axle depending on grip and I guess this would have to be removed as well, so , new propshaft/remove centre diff etc etc. Sounds like too much hassle to me!!!

Slide over to the S4 (B5) neck of the woods and look at satanschild's 1000bhp RWD S4 Project. There's pictures!

I don't recall if he details how he went RWD, but it may inspire you to great things.
