The benchmark duel........the E46 M3!

Post by GrahamS4 » Sat Feb 17, 2007 1:35 pm

I admire the BMW, would possibly own E46 M3 if they had come up with a 4 door version and do not intend to slag it off.

It is however likely that people who drive them don't often find themselves outpaced....

I think it's because the M3 is so popular and such a good performer that it is often used as a benchmark.

Now in the 10 month s I've had my S4, 9 months of that with the custom remap I've only covered about 3K miles, so it's not unlikely that I've not come up against much on the road so far......

So on my way home from filling up with petrol and a few Saturday morning errands, I join a roundabout behind the M3. I figure he could be heading out of town on my of my fav. A roads and it would do no harm to give the car a run to see.

Sure enough he went my way. No passengers, I was hoping he might bite.

There was traffic on the road, but mostly travelling in our direction and it panned out well allowing for some good overtakes.

Well lets just say after the 3rd multi car overtake I was still on his bumper as I had been for every overtake. On the first two I had to back off a little, but the third I think the M3 must have used full beans, the two cars we overtook were spaced out a little but we stayed out for both. He didn't pull away at all.

I was well chuffed with that.

Overtakes were from about 50 and I used 3rd gear, hitting about 100 (km right?) in between groups of cars.

Overall a worthile and pleasing detour home :D

I had a dabble on an open stretch of road and results were mixed. From a standing start all the way I think I would have won... mid range, I had it. Up and running 4th and onwards I recon he probably had a slight edge - up and running they are very quick. DYING to find one now :P

I was chuffed with the outcome and am reassured my car is fast enough. Thoughts that followed included having power like yours and being able to go further than just match the performance though.

I just hope he went home and started googling to find out the stats of the best performing S plate A4.

M3

I have a lot of respect for M3's , my neighbourg have one with DSG box and in his hands it is mega quick, it does rev so quick. I have the edge at start for sure and top end . Now he has a 100 cells cats+ milltek back box and does pull really hard :)

The M3 is a proper track car, the suspension are really top, brakes are really good, that straight six is just so good!!

Still, i toast him anytime :D , we are really good friend even he knows my "family estate" car is damn quicker than his flash coupe

I had a little play with one this morning...coming out of the roundabouts from around 30 to 70, I was ahead, but after that he was right up my bottom...I had to back off at the end, partly because I was going a different way at the next roundabout, but also because the S2 that was with us at the start just died...(hall sender :bash: ). So I guess he turned onto the motorway thinking he'd just wopped an S4

They're bloomin' fast that's for sure

(again, all speeds are in km/hr)

I remember a story a evo owner told me... on his way to a RR session met an M3... he ran against it and up till 120 he was quicker, soon after that the M3 reeled him in and passed him at a steady rate. He was very disappointed and off he went to the RR session. His result was 440HP!! The evo was damn quick up to a point, but the M3 must be very aero dynamic and not having the 4wd drag becomes quite a beast over 100MPH.
