Showdown... RS4 versus new S4

Excellent write up Tim - I'm suprised that the RS opened up a 20 car gap - thought that it would be much closer than that, given the lack of lag on the new S4.

I agree - an excellent write up. Unfortunately I won't get time to test drive it for a while so it's great to read these reviews.

I would expect Audi to have produced such a fine car, but I am certainly not surprised to read about a 20 car length lead. Remember that the ability of a car to accelerate is dependent on the torque curve, and where the revs are. As others have pointed out, the M3 is only a stonking car if you keep the revs high. The new S4 should have a better torque curve being a 4.2, but it is still only at its best at high revs.

So on a track the new S4 should indeed be excellent, and within RS4 league. However for road driving where revs are constantly changing, the extra low-down torque of the turbocharged 2.7 will always win.

The good thing is that if the new S4 is such an excellent car then the new RS4 should be orgasmic! I'm saving my money...

P.S. Thanks for the Pics. IMO the new S4 looks pretty poor against the RS4. I have seen 1.9TDI A4s with the bodykit that look better than this new S4. I hope that Audi make the new RS4 look a less like a beached whale.

Thanks for the comments chaps. I think we are unanimously agreed on this. The S4 IS a great car but, it loses to the best all rounder ever built [img]images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img] It just didnt punch hard enough... Oh, and its as plain as a Bulgarian pin - up.

Lets all hope that Audi do build the RS4 of the future... [img]images/graemlins/thumbs.gif[/img]
