Timing belt

Post by DaveWal » Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:05 am

Hi,

First, apologies if this is in the wrong place, I'm not familiar with Audi model numbers.

A friend of mine owns an Audi A6, 2.5 TDi SE 140 BHP (06 01 1997 Engine No. AEL049012)

He's interested to know if it is a possible DIY job to fit a new timing belt with the engine in the car.
Are there any 'special' tools required ?

We would be grateful for any info or pointers to where same can be found.

Dave.

i would have thought that this is possible with engine still in car but it has to be carried out by qualified people and with special tools..

This is a first class mission to do and you need VAS 5051 to check the pump timing afterwards. Or VAG Com of course!
If it aint broke then dont try to fix it!

pump timing.. are you talking about the mechanical injection? There must be a number of timing marks that can be lined up rather than relying on VAG?

Anyway, isn't the TDi diesal meaning it has mechanical FI, no spark plugs, and so no electronics, so no VAG?

technology has moved on from the old style diesel engine..yes there mite be timing marks and yes u could mark things with paint but it still has an ecu(brain) and if u get summit wrong then pow!!! a whole lot of mess..
and if its anything like doing a petrol timing belt then like i said unless u have done a few b4..let the pro,s doit..pay peanuts get monkeys..oh and good luck :redrs4:
