Copied from another forum:

The A3 8V sat nav system can import custom points of interest (POI) files, which means you can have icons appear on the maps to show things of interest. This includes speed cameras.

So, off I tootle to http://www.pocketgpsworld.com and download the latest database. You need to select the Garmin format. Once you have that, the fun begins!

Take yourself to My Audi > Special Destinations (don't worry - you don't need to have Audi Connect) and then go to the section to do with personal POIs. Add the Garmin images and also a suitable icon (as attached) and then you can create some lists. I named them 'Speed Cameras - SPECS' and 'Speed Cameras - GATSO' for the two main types that I want to know about. There are others and they are all downloaded as separate files from PocketGPSWorld, so easy to show / hide the ones you want.

After a few moments it is then possible to download the files from Audi and put them on an SD card and copy them to your MMI system.

The final but is to enable the map to show certain POIs on the maps at all times.

However, there is a catch. For some reason the POIs are set to only show up at a certain zoom level, so when trundling along a motorway, the icons are not shown. So I delve in to the data files and then find the appropriate part of the code and change the zoom level.

(For the technical people, edit the file categories.pc so that the zoom level is set to max=30.)

Awesome, now I have cameras shown while driving along.

Perfect!

No warnings like a real detector / alert system, but darn useful when on main roads. Of course this does not help with mobile cameras, but it's still more useful than nothing. I might add the mobile and red light cameras in due course, but that means updating weekly, which is quite a chore!
Cool, learnt something new & yes it appears the same route as per the VW, as the updates can be applied by using VW Car-Net or imported via USB/SD Card.

What i did find though is the pocketgpsworld POI's for Speed Cameras do NOT have audible warnings as this is a limitation of the VW's NAV system, however this fella on eBay has a better file structure that DOES include audible warnings, so a far better offering & cheaper at £4.99. The only thing that's still limited by the VW's Nav system is direction of travel, so you'll get an audible warning regardless of your direction of travel, but like anything, too many alerts is far better than none at all:)

You also get with this file off eBay, 4 camera types all with different icons, those being Gatso, SPECS, Traffic Light & Mobile. It does take up 4 POI slots & the VW system can only display 10, so took a bit of decision making to limit which other 6 i have displayed as i wanted all the Speed Camera types to be visible & warned.

This is interesting as it did seem a bit pointless without an audible warning. I think the main fact that stop me doing it was that I had to sign up and pay to join and get the camera info in the first place. But this audible version might be worth trying.

Had the APR Hi-Torque tune applied on Sunday, along with some VWR aftermarket parts to improve airlflow to/from the Turbo.

All i can say is this has transformed the car (hardly a surprise). Acceleration is now relentless in all gears & it was hardly slow when stock. No idea on the exact gains, but APR quote 380bhp & 400lbsft, with a 0-62 of around 3.7/8secs, which is somewhat of a giggle in a Golf.

Bit rich for my blood & can't see any Warranty remaining in tact at that level:)

Will stick with my £1000 worth to get to this point & leave it there (i hope).

Thought i'd post a little update on the Golf R now i've covered a couple of thousand miles.

Quite simply, i'm astounded as to how accomplished this car is. I genuinely believe that if you wanted/needed just one car that ticked basically every box at a sensible price, then nothing can really come close to this R Estate.

Been out on a few spirited drives with a local car club (some very tasty machinery) & the R was able to either embarrass or at the very worst stick with everything. Pains me to say this, but along for the most recent hoon were a couple of proper M's (M3 & M4) along with 2 x M140i's & no doubt more to do with the recent weather, the R ran rings round them. The enhancements (tune & airflow upgrades) will of course aided no end, but the poise, grip & stability of the Golf in all conditions is quite simply astounding.

Not sure i've ever quite enjoyed a car as much as i'm enjoying this Golf & slightly annoyed i got the A8 first, as had i not then every journey could be in the R.

Although probably a strange comparison, it really does feel like a budget RS6, but carrying half a ton less fat around. In a straight line it's ballistic, the low weight means it's insanely nimble on the A/B roads & although not up to the same spec levels of the RS6, being the 7.5R it has standard kit that the C7 never saw, so more up to date with shiny toys & newer tech. I guess the comparison is easier as mine's an Estate (first estate i've ever had).

Did you go for DSG Paul? Can’t remember. Mr aHarris described the DSG Golf R as a mini GTR.

I’d quite fancy either a mk7 Golf R or a B8.5 S4 as the second car at home. Can’t decide!

The common criticism of the R is that the “engine has no character”. With the map and intake mods - do you find that criticism valid? Does it still have the OEM exhaust?

I've had to downsize for a year or so as I'm building a few houses next year. After much deliberation I bought a Golf GTi Clubsport, it's not the stripped out 3 door S version but it's still a brilliant little car, I nearly went for a R but the Mrs had one a couple of years ago so thought I'd get something a bit different. Pound for pound these fast Golfs are hard to beat.

Yes, the 7.5R Estate is DSG only, no manual available. Also has all 4 exhaust exits live :rocker:

TBH, it’s hard to separate the engine as the car overall has masses of character. End of the day it’s only a 2.0 4pot, so never gonna sound exciting, which is why they fit that daft Soundaktuator (mine’s disabled). But hard not to enjoy around 390bhp & 400lbsft in a Golf (Estate).

Stuck with the standard exhaust, my GT-R was the last car I changed the exhaust as nowadays I prefer a more subtle approach :drink:

S4’s a good shout & some cracking deals on those & S3 Black Editions.
