C7 S6 vs. C6 RS6

Post by W8PMC » Fri Aug 17, 2012 8:03 am

Just a curious question?.

The wife's Q5 is in for a service & a couple of pre end of Warranty fixes/updates & we were given a TT-S Roadster as a loan car (she's considering a TT-S or TT-RS as a repalcement later this year). Long story short, they need it for another day or 2 but we're off down South this morning for a long weekend away & youngest is coming with us so the TT-S Roadster wasn't suitable due to lack of rear seats. Asked for a replacement that would be nice for a longer Journey & collected a brand new (assuming it's a C7) S6 last night with a few tasty options. Tis a 12 plate with 130 miles on the clock & has the new 4.0 TFSi V8 engine which i believe adorns all the new bigger S's although in slightly different levels if tune.

Question is this, according to the Audi figures the S6 saloon is 414bhp, but can hit 62 in 4.6secs which i believe is a tad quicker than the same power but much smaller & lighter B7 RS4, but also the same time as the much more powerful & about the same weight C6 RS6. How can this be & also with a combined MPG of 30?

Only driven a few miles so far & i have to be honest it's a true Q car, but when the loud pedal is buried it takes off a fair lick & the styling along with the interior is awesome. Not quite the size inside as my new A8, but will defo make a superb long distance cruiser.

Quite looking forward to the weekends driving :boots:

C7 S6 vs. C6 RS6

C6, especially tuned will still monster it. As for the consumption, can't see you'll be getting 30s very often!

Would also be interested to hear your views on the C7 S6. It looks a tempting propsect on paper if a tad expensive on the configurator. (IIRC I easily got up to £72k! with a few boxes ticked  )

Only 72k? I went well passed that and then hit the 'x'. Keep the C6 and go the DK route with a V10 R8.

apart from being more economical ... i really dont see the point of a C7 S6 over a late, well spec'd C6 RS 6

the C6 has all the same tech (more or less) as the C7 in terms of ICE / Sat Nav / adaptive cruise etc etc.

yes its thirsty, but try swallowing the shocking depreciation S6's have always suffered from.

The C7 is very very diferent inside to the C6 & a whole lot more modern. This one has a few options such as HUD & Cameras all round (like this gadget). Given it's only £53K OTR, even with monster depreciation it'll still be reasonable value when looked against the £20+k more RS6 & same price RS4.

I reckon as a 6mth old demo for say £43k with a few toys it would be a cracking purchase.

Perhaps, but on paper & according to Audi they're the same at 4.6sec to 62 (stock). Given the RS has 160bhp more & can't be that much heavier, i'm astounded at the performance match. New RS6 isn't out for a while, so i'd assume the bar will then move up with a C7 or 8, but as the much cheaper cousin (over £20k cheaper), it certainly appears to be able to hold it's own against a C6 RS6 (on paper at least) & is a real treat to drive.

its different inside yes

more modern, i disagree

i've driven one, and the A7 and the A8 ... all 2012 cars with the latest tech

yes you could talk about pointless gizmo's like camera in your wheel bolts and sensors on your roof to warn of low flying aircraft

but the key pieces of technology have not moved on massively from the last C6's (2009>) and current 2012 Audi's

i had a 2012 A8 for a week, and apart from the full digit post code entry, it was no better than my C6 ... and the handwriting recognition is a waste of time as its easier and quicker just to "speak" the nav input via the SDS

the C6 when tuned is 3.7secs to 60 ... so yes it will muller it

and the C7 is helped massively by the S-Tronic ... that helps it get to 60 quickly with launch control and instant shifts

but when up to speed, a tuned C6 will pull away from it like its standing still at 100+

as for MPG, thats disguised with Active Cylinder Deactivation

You'd need to config the ubber options to get to the price. Ceramics are £8K & B&O is £6K so they would take the price high. With the options on the one i'm borrowing, i think it's just over £55K so that's with Bose, Camera's all round, the clever Data Connection/Bluetooth & Wi-Fi access point & a couple of more minor options.

I own a 2012 A8 & it's a generation more modern inside. If you disagree then fair enough but the interior of the C6 A6 has been around for close to 8yrs so is a little dated. Agree that the MMI upgrade was a welcome uplift to the C6 RS6 but open the door & it's still an original C6 (not knocking it as is still a great place to be). The 2012 C7 is in my opinion very modern, as is the new A8. This however is a generic RS issue as they're usually the run out model & thus can look a little dated quickly & why they often get a slight Tech uplift. In the C5 you may recall they added the Plus which benefited from RNS-E.

Pointless debate if you now have to tune the RS6. I'm describing like for like, stock vs. stock & can only quote the on paper figures. I'm sure the S6 could be tuned to unleash at least an extra 100 horses as it's the same unit as in the more powerful S8. MY point was the S6 is massively down on power & torque to a C6 RS6, must surely weigh the same, yet 'on paper' can match it on the important numbers whilst using 40% less fuel.

Agree some of the fuel saving is the Cylinder Deactivation & of course it's got one less blower & 1200 less CC, however that in my mind is a huge plus. It's a great appeal to me that when cruising on the Motorway for long distances i can get over 30mpg due to clever engine management when selceting Economy mode, but when switching that to Dynamic it can play with the bigger boys.

That seems pretty good considering the C6 S6 recommended OTR was £55,750.
