RS6 Ceramic Breaks ??

I am looking at getting a 2017 RS6 performance, it has done 52,000 miles, one concern it has ceramic breaks, and my mechanic told be they are very very costly to replace, the dealer has said they are good for around 100,000 miles ?
Also, someone else I was talking to said that the breaking with them isn't that great ?

Are they relaying personal first hand information to you? Yes they are expensive to replace if you need new discs but they wont need replacing for at least 150k miles+. Steel discs are not that cheap either and barely last 30k. Pads are good for around 100k + and are around £400 so not crazy for this type of car.
Braking is absolutely fine.. I have never had any issue with them and in reality have been fanatastic at stopping in some serious situations.
Ideally you should inspect the ceramics carefully for cracking and chips form both sides and measure the pad thickness. All good then you will enjoy the stopping power with these.

It will be a downgrade conversion. It's cheaper option but at the cost of weight penalty and dusty brake.

Had ceramics for the past 100K miles - absolutely love them! Amazing stopping power and virtually no wear (they've done over 150K miles now).

The only thing to be aware of is that they do suffer for a split second when cold and wet - eg cruising on a wet motorway. They clear (and warm up very quickly), but it can be a heart-stopping moment when cruising at speed and suddenly seeing brake lights ahead! Once aware of it then it's easy enough to clear the brakes once in a while.

Enjoy them - they are a must have option for me!

Hello Clive,

I am in the same position as you, found a lovely RS6 Performance 67 plate but have been put off by the astronomical prices for changing these enormous disc's (if needed).

The car has done 94,000 miles and have received a video from the dealer, they look pretty much brand new, no sign of the 3 wear marks or chipping ( not seen in person yet).

My question is, did you end up buying the vehicle back in 2023, if so how have you found the ceramics, and what mileage have you covered in the vehicle?

Any help would be great!

Wonder how long it will last I am 220.000 km now everything is ok but I hear squeaky sound when stopping wonder what could be?

Hi all - I'm now up to 175K miles (280K Kms) and still as good as new - maybe I should try harder when stopping!!

Honestly I wouldn't go back to the old steel brakes etc if you paid me - ceramics are just "fit and forget".

And yes there can be noise at relatively light breaking and low speed - a bit embarrasing around town, but not an issue elsewhere. I think it's a layer of dirt that starts to coat the disc - I think MRC have cleaned them for me a couple of times, but not sure. Seem better after a good run!

Thank you for the reply, thats some serious mileage you have clocked up! Have you had to change your brake pads at all?

I have found some ceramic pads for the front which are circa £1000 (not so bad if your only changing them 60-70k miles).

My current RS3 2016 have the cog iron discs and they squeak at low speeds around town when warmed up so I'm used to this lol.

That put my mind at ease somewhat, i've seen a lot of people get well over 100-150k miles and they are still like new.

If I do purchase you will find me on here a lot more

Still on original discs and pads - I think last MOT said pads 20% worn!

Wow, that is seriously impressive!

The one I'm looking at has 94k on the clock, I've been to see it now, in great condition, discs look brand new and the pads have plenty of meat left on them, the long term mileage trip has not been reset for 88k and the previous owner averages 25mpg so that's pretty good.

Test driving it on Wednesday so will decide from there!

Great. Audi sais that they can spray something to put away that squeak noise, but I don’t think I want it, did 220.000 km still on original disc pads

Hi guys,

I ended up buying the RS6 that I was looking at, had it only two days and loving it! Sad to see my little RS3 go but quickly falling in love with the new beast!

Already experienced an absolute moron turning right at the last second so had to emergency stop... with the ceramic brakes it was like pulling my face off, so much stopping power!

Hopefully it treats me well and paid for a 2 year extended warranty to cover myself for the main things!

I've got 10990 miles on mine, dont think i need to worry about pads and discs just yet
