Recall Oil Strainer Turbos - Recall code 21H7

Post by SchrickRS6 » Thu May 05, 2022 12:36 pm

Hi

Unsure wether you guys have been notified by your Audi dealers yet, but I am a member of a Facebook group specifically for the C7 RS6, and predominantly Norwegian members.
Recently they uploaded a document from Audi Germany regarding a recall for the oil strainers for the turbos.

https://www.kfz-betrieb.vogel.de/audi-r ... B-SuR27JFo

Its in German, but some browsers can translate easily.

Anyway I called Audi (Sweden) this morning and they had just received the recall document this morning. Date is set for the car to go in on the 1-2 June.

Hope this is helpful to those of you affected... think its upto -2017 june cars.
Thanks
J

Did the USA get the RS6 2014-2017 models?

Maybe its not uploaded yet in the UK.
I would keep checking - otherwise drive to Germany for it ?
I wonder if beauracracy has made it an EU issue only.
Thanks
J

In reality this issue has been around, and ignored, for literally decades on various Audi engines. :audibash:
e.g. my 2002 build D2 S8 (4.2 non-turbo obviously) has very similar oil strainers built in that are too fine and get clogged. When that happens oil pressure bursts through the strainer and particles of the metal mesh get mixed into the oil. The first "target" in that engine is the chain tensioners which get destroyed along with the engine soon after ......

My engine happens to be being "fettled" right now and the strainers seem to have survived - they have been removed completely now.
Picture below, it's the small oval just below centre, the big "pad" is part of the tensioner and is also in good condition though now replaced.

And this is after it's all refitted on Bank 1 with a new pad (Bank 2 is usually less at risk, but is next):

I followed up with Audi UK yesterday and they have now finally accepted! Copied below

I have checked your vehicle again on our internal system and I can confirm that there is a recall for Replacing oil strainer.

The safety of our customers and the reliability and long-term service life of our models represent our top priority. For this reason, Audi conducts programmes to constantly monitor the quality of its products.

As part of this, we have found that the mesh size of the oil strainer in the oil supply for both turbochargers is too small to allow the strainer to perform its function with suitable robustness in all the conditions that may occur in everyday use. Depending on the conditions in which the vehicle is used, deposits may accumulate in the engine oil system. Over time, these may clog up the oil strainer, which could lead to an insufficient supply of oil to the turbochargers. If a turbocharger becomes defective as a result, this can lead to a loss of power or even to the engine switching off without sufficient warning.

For safety reasons, the oil strainer in the oil supply for both turbochargers will be replaced with one with a larger mesh size. The work required will take approximately one day and will, of course, be performed free of charge.

Please contact your Audi Centre to make an appointment. Contact details for all Audi Centres can be found here:

Shame my turbos actually had damage end of March and I replaced them then. So Im seeing if I can get some compensation to the bill!

Just booked mine in for end of June with Audi Sheffield - but they seem to think it's a 2 hour job. Hope so or I'll be sleeping in Ikea Sheffield overnight!
