On the hunt and hopefully getting an RS6

Post by drbru » Mon Mar 14, 2022 11:57 pm

So.....Its been an interesting year from a car search point of view and i think Ive finally settled on something

Im shortly putting my f10 m5 up for sale and originally considered a lotus exige 430 cup, 911 turbo s, GTR or even an R8 but with used prices as they are, I have had to rethink quite a bit....

Mid life crisis is definitely kicking in so bought myself a Yamaha R7 bike and will start my bike training next week. This will be my toy because I not going to get the adrenaline rush from the cars above simply because im not prepared to spend that kind of money in an inflated market. I appreciate that second hand RS6s are inflated as well but to be honest ive been looking for a new car for well over a year now and basically fed up of waiting. Decided on an RS6 with a budget of 60k so hopefully that should get me a low mileage performance one with a decent spec...Not that much on auto trader at the moment that I like the look of but hoping the next time im on here it will be as an RS6 owner. Ideally im after black, blue or nardo so hoping i won't have to wait too much longer

I have gone down this road also, interestingly enough - I sold my F10 M5 for a GTR 2015 MY, loved the handling and performance especially the steering feedback... but could not live with that interior or maintenance costs. Went back to the M5 F10, then sold that for the RS6 I currently have.

Why? Well the GTR was good but as I mentioned the interior in the pre 2017 models is pony, although I did love the Polyphony digital info displays on everything from Oil pressure, Temp, Turbo boost, etc etc.
I couldn't be arsed with the lack of grip in the F10 M5 and the ONLY thing that looked good and performed well was the C7 RS6 that was within my price range. Once I test drove it, I was in love, the fact you can just squeeze that pedal in all sorts of weather and get supreme performance coupled with one of my favourite interiors was enough for me to hand over my money there and then. Plus the dog could come along for the ride.
Thanks
J

I hear you about the GTR although I was considering a newer one...Problem is I wouldn't consider buying one without warranty which means I would have to be paying around 80k with current prices at the moment and its just not worth that kind of money to me considering I can hopefully get a decent RS6 for 60k and then just buy the extended audi warranty

Have to admit im glad im getting out of the m5....I had high expectations going into it some 8 years ago after I sold my B7 RS4 (loved that car) but i haven't enjoyed the ownership experience.. BMW dealerships have been pretty bad (other than the one im currently with) and you cant really use all of the m5s potential unless conditions are perfect.

If I wasn't buying the bike, I would need some kind of "toy" but having a bike and a family car will tick all my boxes as long as the bike doesn't kill me!

Seconded on the GTR-when I was looking for a suitable replacement for my first C7 I test drove a 2012 Litchfield 4.8 tuned (around 680 bhp) one. Hands down the quickest and best handling car I’d ever driven bar none. Savagely impressive.
As you all say though-the interior is frankly dogsh1t. Time tunnel to the 90’s and more plastic than a kardashian episode. Horrendous and as a daily was a ‘no way’. Plus other GTR drivers can be…..a select bunch shall we say? Plus trying to find an untuned and unabused one is very difficult.
I then went onto my biggest car mistake by getting an A45 AMG which was not a pleasant ownership experience.
M cars are brilliant at handling and a newer M5 is on my strong shirt list for next cars. Never understood people tuning RWD cars to crazy power-you can’t put it down and as you say unless it perfect conditions (rare in the UK) you just spin. The old M3/4 forums and SM groups were full of idiots who didn’t learn the car first before tuning it and hey presto-upside down in a ditch or in a field written off.
RS6’s really do hold a class of their own.

Stevo - how much do you miss the old E34 M5? That car was my gateway drug also.
I hear you on the Merc, I wouldnt buy one even though I am curious about the C63S's.....they are just way too fugly.

drbru - I think the F10 is a great car, but it just has to be in motion to get the benefit of all that performance and of course it needs to be dry even at higher speeds. Thats too many environmental constraints on the perfect drive to be honest.
And yes alot of the BMW dealerships are terrible....unfortunately thats a global thing, unless you go to Germany - where its a whole other ball game.
Thanks

They are out there and set up search results on PistonHeads and Auto Trader but don’t discount some left field searches like Gumtree and Ebay as dealers advertise in there as well.
One thing I’ve learned is unless you have a mate as a car dealer (nearly said dealer there which sounds a bit ) then forget about them hunting for a car for you. Had that many many times when I’ve asked them to keep me posted for a certain model. They’re either too busy or forget about you. They don’t get much commission on cars so we’re all just numbers to them.
Best way is to keep looking and stick at it. In general it takes me 2 months to get the right one so be patient but be ready to jump at it or risk losing it.
I’m back on the hunt as my RS6 is about to go but what to get next is the question.
