Wet drivers footwell...again

Post by johnny11 » Sun Jul 25, 2021 4:09 pm

I had the sunroof cassette replaced 18 months ago as this was diagnosed as being the culprit of causing the wet drivers footwell, the Audi dealership I bought the car from payed as this had been happening since not long after i had purchased the car in 2018. Today have had heavy rain and now the drivers footwell is wet again, surely this can’t be the sunroof again, it seems to be more wet in the middle of the carpet on the drivers footwell.
I have check the drain holes on the sunroof and they are working ok, and the wind deflector is dry so I don’t think it’s sunroof issue. Are they any places I need to look where the water maybe coming in from?

Ps thh car has an Audi extended warranty but there get out clause will be its a water leaking Issue which they do not cover.
Thanks in advance

In my experience, wet footwells are rarely caused by leaking sunroofs unless the drain pipes have detached. More likely is that the scuttle drains are slightly blocked - usually with dead leaves and the like - with light rain the water gradually drains through the blockage but heavy rain is too much and the water rises enough to leak in past a faulty bonnet release cable grommet.

I agree, leaves blocking drains is the usual problem, Had this once not long after i got mine, had a good blast with a hose around the area under the bonnet and never happened since

Hi, do you know where the drain holes are under the bonnet, I’ve tried having a quick look but can’t see them?

After over 3 weeks, it been in for a service and they have replaced the sunroof cassette yet again under warranty as this was causing the leak due to a crack in the frame. Now surely having 2 of these in just over a year should highlight an issue with Audi!!

I have exactly the same issue.
Your photo shows water running from the bonnet release handle. Mine in exactly the same.

Sounds like @jim hasletime is correct. Just need to work out where needs a good blow out with an airline...

Yep I have the same issue too. Interestingly enough, Audi declined the warranty claim when I put it into my local Audi dealer saying that it's not covered so it's now been back to North Wales Audi, where I bought it in March. They've had the car back twice totalling 7 weeks and it still leaks in exactly the same place! It's going back for a 3rd time next week as they "need to follow a process" before we can discuss taking the car back under "distance selling". They've supposedly replaced all seals etc totalling 22 hours labour. Scuttle drains are definitely clear as I've tested those. When I put a pressure washer on the car around the windscreen, driver's window and door gaps it doesn't leak but within an hour of it raining then it leaks around the bonnet release so go figure. I've had enough of it all now to be honest.

It might be worth sharing any resolution on this as one of the guys on one of the FB groups I'm on is a Master Technician and he also thinks it's the red flaps at the end of the drain tubes as that is something that in his experience removing them is often a fix as he often sees this across the broader model range.
