Rodent Damage??

Post by markjo77 » Mon Apr 19, 2021 3:50 pm

Not sure if Audi are trying to pull a fast one here, car went into limp mode, got recovered to a dealer via Audi, they have called me today to say the wire to the oil cooling sensor has been chewed by rodents? Now i have only had this car six months, and it was serviced two weeks ago and the tech said it was in immaculate condition...
So do i suck it up or kick it up to Audi UK?

I've been in a similar situation albeit with an M5 touring that was under BMW warranty, the car started going into limp mode so went into my local main dealer. The initial diagnosis was a faulty sensor, however further inspection revealed rodent damage to the engine wiring loom, at this point the garage could not say for sure what the root cause of the issue was: the damage to the wiring loom or the sensor, the warranty would not sanction the works to the sensor until the wiring loom was replaced so I had no option but to pay £2k to get the whole wiring loom replaced.

I don't think any car warranty will pick up the tab for rodent damage, and I doubt many home insurance policies would also cover it (how could you even prove where it had happened?) so I think it is a case of sucking it up. I would ask the garage to save and show you the affected item, and if you store your car in a garage maybe get a mousetrap to see if you're getting any regular visitors.

Where do you park the car, in a garage or outside?
Do you live out in the sticks at all?
Ask for pictures of the damage, easy to tell if wiring has been chewed through.

The RS4 is a nice car, and my wife really liked it, very well finished and updated tech with bigger screens etc if that's your thing, however its not in the RS6 league, its quick but runs out of puff :).. In some ways its better suited to the roads and traffic we now all have, as its lighter and feels nimble low down, the car only had 1000 miles on the clock so may give up more performance in time...
Its also not as solid feeling as the RS6, both in terms of finish or on the road, but that's because the 6 is a bigger car with a wider track.
I would not swap the RS6 for one, but my wife would ;)
