On the hunt

Post by Bainsey » Thu Nov 12, 2020 6:57 pm

Hi all, new here after being directed here by a friend who recommended this forum.

I'm just starting my search for a C7 RS6. I've pretty much settled on a facelift PE, open on colour but I prefer the more subtle black / grey as opposed to the Blues or reds. Prices do seem to be all over though!

When searching the PE models though I've noticed that many of them have full leather seats rather than the 1/2 leather alcantara versions that I thought were one of the things that made the PE version different. Am I confused on this or was the alcantara a cost extra?

If anyone has any tips on buying it would be much appreciated, I've trawled through many of the threads on here and it looks like a great community, looking forward to be able to contribute myself once I've found the right car.

Welcome on board; we are a friendly bunch - you will LOVE the C7

Alcantara on the PE was a no cost extra; having had both - alcantara every time

I'd go for the 21" PE wheels rather than the 21" Non PE wheels.
Pan roof every time for resale
Millie is a nice to have but an easy extra to add.
HUD is a must. Miss it sooo much in the Brabus, as being able to go around corners too!!!
Rear camera is a must - you'd be surprised how many don't have a camera!! Even a 2008 Peugeot has one.
FASH is a must
Find a non mapped example othwise you can kiss goodbye to the warranty. TD1 code will flag up
Having had DRC and Std air, I prefer the air set up (though theres plenty who prefer DRC) There have been a number of failures of DRC, which out of warranty are £1500/corner. Mine went
Black. Daytona - personally I think they make it just that too subtle.
Nardo / Sepang are more suited IMO
Red - tend to hang around on forecourts for a while.
Tyres are around £200 per corner (Costco) Michelin PS4S's - I got around 18k per set
Front discs and pads - £1200 - I got around 25k out of mine.
Rear pads / discs circa £800 from memory - when I sold my PE at 37kmiles - had around 40% left on the pads
MPG - high teens to low 20's in traffic. On a run, 30+ easily.

Happy to put you in touch with my guy (non Audi main dealer) who purchased mine - he has one or two coming in over the next few weeks.

Best all round car I've ever had. Period

Would have had a C8 but the Brabus G came up at a price I couldn't say no to, and it's an itch I needed to scratch.

Shout if you have anymore questions - happy to help, though the lads on here will have much more encyclopaedic knowledge on the C7 than I do...

This is great advice Iain - thankyou.

Agreed I prefer the alcantara, and from my limted experience I too prefer the air ride. Do you think having the smoothness of air ride outweighs not having the other dynamic pack extras? Appreciate your feedback

For me, I couldn't tell the difference between air and DRC - in Dynamic mode, even with std air, the car stiffens up significantly - What I liked, is that it would lower itself getting in and out or putting it in dynamic mode. Not as dramatically as a new Ford GT though :boots:

Mine had the std 155 limiter too, driving it at more than 60% of it's capability = banned or dead!!

Didnt hit the limiter once on mine, and had 172 indicated at one point during it's life - thing was as relaxed at that speed as it was at 85mph!!

Thanks Dave, I thought in the future the PE ones would be the most desireable. I'm not buying a car solely thinking about resale but it would be nice to protect myself as much as possible from mammouth depreciation especially as the C8 will push prices down too over the next few years. I absolutely see what you mean about 560 being plenty for the roads though.

I noticed when looking for mine late last year into early this year that there were some unscrupulous sellers listing theirs as a Performance version when in fact it was just a std version.

I also used a company called Vcheck they’re one of the only ones that check if a car has been at the salvage auctions. Again some unscrupulous sellers buy from these auctions (which is before they’ve been categorised salvaged) repair them. Then legally they don’t have to declare that they’re a salvage car. You would be surprised how many cars out there are actually from a pretty hefty shunt. If a particular car has been at the auction the Vcheck system checks the copart database then flags up and links you into the auction so you can see the damage.

As for your colour choice Sepang Blue (SB) is just sublime. It shows the lines of the car like no other. The creases om the front wheel arch seem to be more pronounced than on any other colour. My 2 choice were SB or Daytona grey (DG). I went DG in the end as I wanted a colour that would make me less precious over the paint, coming from a rare blue on my last car. I was keen to avoid the ludicrous tenacity for cleaning it that I had! I dont regret going DG for one second it’s such a nice colour and suits the car perfectly. I do however on the rare occasion that I see a SB have to rub my thighs!!!

Good luck on the search dude.

Reading that Craig reminded me of a time when I worked in an area in the Midlands that also was the home of a very well known auction house. They had some seriously high end vehicles there.
Anyway I got chatting to some of the local workers who revealed a pretty dark side to it. Many of the cars there were nearly new but were recoveries by finance firms and when they came in to the auction house they had numerous issues.
The normal story was that someone would take out finance on a high end performance car. Then never make a payment on it.
The company would chase payments but get the run around as they could never track down the actual owner (they would come from a community that shared the same name and have many family members). In the meantime the car is being passed around and driven like it’s stolen -which it technically had.
When it breaks down they just abandon it on a street and walk away. Finance firm can’t locate the actual owner as they all close ranks.
So the car gets repossessed, stuck on a low loser and off to an auction house. The auction house puts it back on the road and sells it on.
The guys I was speaking to remarked that all the punters coming in thought they were getting a killer bargain but were totally unaware of the hard life that car has had. They told me of a recent arrival of a 911 Turbo S. ‘Owners’ had driven it that hard the brake lines had ruptured and sprayed all over the back of the car. Dumped in a back street and recovered.
Hence why I will never buy from an auction.

My C7PE went to an auction house recently via WEBAC, I know that it’s now for sale at s main dealer. It’s a very clean car, had it detailed and ceramic coated from new, covered 27k with no faults. It’s daytona with a pan roof and DRC, no badges and running on Michelin’s that only had about 4K on them before I sold the car. If the op is interested then pm me and I will direct you to it.
