295 30 21 Tyres on a 10.5" rim

Post by morski » Fri Jul 10, 2020 2:34 pm

Standard size is 285 30 21 on the oem 9.5 but the same size tyre on a 10.5" width rim looks a little stretched so was wondering if any one is running a 295 width tyre on a 10.5" rim?
Tyres are Michelin Pilot Sports
thanks

I ran a 285/30/21 on a 10.5 with no issues and pretty much everyone that buys aftermarket wheels on the the C7 does the same. But if you really don't like it then I imagine the 295 will work but at what profile? A 295 will obviously be wider, but also less 'stretched' so maybe a bit extra width there too then you need to consider the height difference a 295/30/21 will have over a 285/30.
FYI, 285 on a 9.5 is far too small. 285 is the perfect size for a 10.5 rim. I've had this discussion on here before, but a 285 really doesn't look stretched on a 10.5 and I don't know why Audi put such a wide tyre on a 9.5 rim. My Alfa comes with 10" wheels with 285 tyres.

According to this website maximum size on a 9.5 rim is 275.
Ideal size on a 10.5 is 275 or 285 and 295 listed as the maximum.

These photos are of Michelin PSS 285/20/21 on a 10.5 rim. Look okay to me, see what you think.

Thats what ive seen everywhere that the 285 is perfectly fine on the 10.5" rim. The picture is what im referring to.. look a little stretched to me and exposing the rim so theres no rim protector. what do you think?
I know different manufacturers of the same size tyre can vary in the way they protect the rim edge.
a 295/30/21 is giving a error of -0.84% ( doing 30mph is actually 29.75mph) where as if i drop the profile to 25 it ups the error to 3.45% ( 30mph will be 31.04mph) according to willtheyfit.com so a 295/30 would be more suitable

Refurb of a wheel costs less than a new tyre so I'm not bothered about the tyre protecting the rim (I almost never have to parallel park either so that helps).
I was going to suggest that maybe it looks bad in that photo due to the actual style of the wheel but they look like the exact same wheels I have and the box behind them is the box mine came in too. I see what you mean though but I don't remember mine ever looking like that. Maybe it looks worse because they don't have the weight of the car on them.

Yes TSW Bathurst 21x10.5... Pictures i have seen the 285's look ok but these do look like they need some extra width ... like you said maybe they need the weight of the car on them but i have my doubts

I run Michelin 295/30 on 10.5” rims....to provide more rim protection & also more accurate speedo readings.

P4S or SS?

Just put one SS on in 295 30 21 as a test on 1 wheel and it looks perfect now. Spokes are not exposed.

I get you are doing it to protect your wheels but surely you've just introduced more speedo error by going to 295/30 than a 'stretched' 285/30?

I say 'stretched' as when I had this configuration it wasn't stretched at all. And according to tyresizecalculator.com and other sources you shouldn't even have a 285 width tyre on a 9.5" rim; 285 is in the ideal range for a 10.5, not even in the max region.

Point taken Mike.
Going wider just gives that additional
‘overlap’ to add a debatable amount of rim protection for ... The depth/side profile is what provides the accuracy of the speedo ... as long as the tyre isn’t ‘stretched’... in this case a 30 profile is best matched for the given 21” rim.

3mm ride height gain. -0.84% speedo error, Speedo at 60mph will read 59.49. Quite acceptable in my opinion
