No error codes at all, just dodgy starting issues. Had the battery tested and that was all good.

What convinced me was the fact the oil had a very strong smell of fuel to it, sure sign that the pump/ pumps were leaking... since changing them I’ve had no issues at all.

I didn’t buy brand new replacements either, found 2 used ones which came off an S7 with 20,000miles on it, got both pumps for £200 delivered from Germany to the UK.

Mine were replaced by VAS Works in Poole, Dorset. They are VAG specialist and highly recommended for general servicing through to Miltek and tuning. Very fast, honest service.

My car also had no error codes related. The fuel leak was in the return side of the pumps and apparently there’s an Audi Tech Bulletin for the issue. They recommend replacing both pumps.

I could see the corrosion on the spring quite clearly. If your oil smells like a 2 stroke hedge trimmer, get them replaced!

Why replace something that works fine?

Those of us that have replaced them have had issues, hence the reason for changing both pumps.

No one is saying to change them without cause.... if you’re having starting issues, lumpy idle or the oil is smelling of fuel, chances are the HPFP are failing.

Hi,

I’m at Unit 20 who have diagnosed both my HP fuel pumps have been leaking hence the hard start issue.

The oil also smells of fuel, So two new pumps and new oil being installed right now.

Seems to be common fault and apparently the fuel pumps have had many changes over the years.

Anyone who’s having warm start issues get it checked ASAP.

Great post! I’ve been having some misfire issues (not bad just little flutters) and after reading this smelt the oil this morning and very strong smell of fuel!

I have a full Audi warranty on the car so I’m hoping this will be covered under that.

Does anyone have experience of it being covered under warranty?

Did you get this sorted under warranty, was it a pain to sort out at Audi ??

Turned out it was a crank breather issue. Engine out job. Got all the work done on warranty 👍🏻

Does anyone have part numbers or suggestions on where to source new HPFP from?

Having the same issue in my 2014 RS6, and I'm guessing its exactly the same as other owners have reported.

Mine is doing this - Audi can't work it out as its so intermittent. Came here to ask if anyone had suffered the same problem - thanks a lot OP, great stuff.
