VCDS - Carista

Post by ShaneyB » Mon Jan 06, 2020 1:15 pm

Hi guys,
I have seen a few posts regarding the pro's and con's for the above two diagnostic/settings tools and can't make my mind up which one to go for?

Mainly I want to change some of the Chimes that go off like when the doors is open for example. Is it worth getting VAG for stuff like that? I'm no genius with modern cars and don't (think) I want to do anything too in depth.

Cheers all.
Shane

I think odbeleven might suit you a bit better and is more user freindly than the others.

Shane, as far as I know that annoying beeping that comes on when you open the drivers door can't be turned off with any app or VCDS. Lots of other useful stuff can be done but I couldn't manage to get rid of that one.

Hi Shane,

I bought the Carista. The main thing I wanted it for was to revert the auto stop / start button, so the light is off when the system is off and there is a separate setting to save the last setting. So now the light is always off and the system is off. For me the stop start function is a PITA!

I also used it to make it bleep when I arm and disarm the alarm, turned on the rear side lights with DRLs and I made the lights stay on a little longer when I get home and arm the system. But apart from that I think that is all I used it for... All done in the free month that you get when you buy the unit for £15....

I also used another app 'OBD Auto Doctor' with the Carista unit to see the cylinder misfires when i had my misfire problem as the Carista app didnt show this level of detail. The OBD Auto Doc app was about £4.50 for a months useage...

I had a VCDS cable and software for my old RS4 and that was a lot more complex to use as you really need to know specific codes (unless there is a more user friendly interface now a days)????!! But it covers a lot lot more than the other apps and is what a lot of specialist dealers use.

Cheers,
Lig.

Last time I used VCDS it was still the same old interface. It's ok once you understand it but could be much more user friendly. If you have a step by step guide then it's quite easy.

My boot closes with the key fob and makes an alarm noise whilst doing so. It doesn't make that noise when I press the close button on the boot.
I want to turn off the Auto stop/start mainly but also just have a little mess around with some of the settings.

Cheers guys.

Hi Tadass,

To be honest I never use the key fob for locking / opening the car. I am not sure if all cars have the touch sensitive buttons on the handles or if that was an option, but it seems by far the easiest way to lock and unlock??

But yes maybe that feature is do-able in the Carista app....

My boot is similar to yours Shane, it doesn't make the noise when closed using the boot button, but it does when I close it using the button on the drivers door...

Cheers,
Lig.

Heh heh... you live and learn.....

From memory I think the button only goes one way, so a quick click to open and then click and hold to close (with ignition on), but have a play it should work!

I keep a pair of Austin Powers billy bob teeth in the glove box, when stuck in traffic and there is a fit bird driving the car behind, slip in the teeth, flip it open, give her a wave then flip it closed - Yeah baby !!!!..... :jump:

Cheers,
Lig.

The keyless entry was an option. Without this option you have to use the key fob to lock and unlock doors. This can't be changed using any app as it requires a hardware change of door handles etc. Although later cars (possible even early RS6) came with the button bit on the door handles even without speccing the option. Can be retrofitted if you want though.
The keyless entry also enable remote closure of the boot using the key fob (short press of the boot button). It did not allow you to close the boot using the drivers door button. However, the drivers door button can be activated to close the boot with an app. You can also activate the remote key fob closure and drivers door button closure with an app on cars without keyless entry.

Ah, thanks Mike. I wasn't sure if this was an option or not.

So worth checking if yours works Shane and if not maybe the Carista app can activate this but I dont know for sure???

Cheers,
Lig.
