Park Assist only sees spaces on the left?

Post by Simell » Sat Nov 30, 2019 5:10 pm

Just traded my 64 plate RS4 for year younger C7 RS6. I wanted to see what the self park assist does, but I am a bit flummoxed! I live in a one way road, with parking on each side, but the park assist only see spaces on the left hand side. Is this right or is there a way to get it to view either side? I don't have the 360 camerawomen just the reversing camera, but keen to get this to function to stop the missus damaging the car!

Don't you use the indicator to tell it which side of the road to park on? More importantly have you read the manual?

Didn't think you could get the parking assist without the 360 degrees camera unless this was a pre facelift option?

Hi Mike, yes I read the manual, in fairness it's explanation is terrible to say the least, if I left my clients instructions like that I'd go out of business! It definitely works fine but only on spaces on the left, it recognises them, then you can decide to back into them, the car taking over the steering. The indicator is only used when you exit the space to tell it what side you want to exit from, as far as I can see. It's weird, as I watched a couple of German videos, all their spaces were on the right, so I am wondering if its a left-hand drive vs right-hand drive thing, just cannot find anything definitive to tell me one way or the other. I will try indicating on one side or the other, but I don't think it's that, the graphic only shows spaces to the left of the car.

From memory the manual said pull up next to a space then indicate to park in that space. But I don't have the car anymore so can't check. I don't think I have an electronic copy either.

Mike, you're right! I tried it again the turn signal determines it, but you need to put that on before the car identifies the space. The problem in my road is that spaces are hard to come by and they could be left or right. The car defaults to looking left with no turn signal, so you need to anticipate the next space and hit the turn signal well before.

Many thanks

I've never used mine - always seemed to take too long to make it's mind up what it was doing when it found a space so I gave up.

I used it once the first day I had it and never used it again. Took too long, much quicker to just park manually.

I have an equivalent feature on my Volvo, exactly the same way of instructing it to park on the drivers side. Probably all made by the same people.
I only ever used it once when I had parked on a quiet road while SWMBO was buying some fish and chips, when the car was about a year old.
I was bored waiting and realised that I could have used the car's systems to park so exited and tried it out as there was no traffic.
It did indeed work, but took about twice as long as I did, so it's never ever been used again; had the car well over 3 years now.

One thing I noted, and Audi is probably the same, is that it uses the road-facing sides and ends of existing parked cars to park between and takes no notice whatsoever of the kerb.
So if they are badly parked or significantly different width to your car, all sorts of anomalies can arise.....
