Turbo options

Post by Joegib1983 » Tue Oct 08, 2019 4:36 pm

Seeing as both my turbos are dead, is there any recommendations on turbos with billet internals as a replacement? I’ve lost faith in the OEM turbos now after seeing how many have actually had issues / failures. The car is standard at the moment and I was planning on keeping it that way but can only find hybrid turbos that come with billet internals.

So, do I just stick normal OEM turbos on or go with hybrids and get it mapped to suit?

Not trying to jump across threads but you say you’ve got blown turbos as well as faulty item as per other thread..

Just asking how olds the car and what’s the mileage and how many oil changes / services has it had in its entire lifetime ?.

How have they failed? And what mileage was done in between services?

Initially the car issue was diagnosed as a failed PCV valve causing the misfire. When the garage started to strip down to replace the PCV valve, both turbos were found to be unserviceable. One has the shaft completely detached and the other has major play and close to failure. I’m yet to find out the actual cause as yet. Doing some research on the issue it appears that it’s becoming increasingly more common.

Since you are from Europe (well till the end of the month with pending Brexit....or Scotland staying in EU...anyway).
Personally i have heard good things about Turbosystems (Lithouwen). Been quoted good prices (lower then SRM and i'm sure import prices can be adjusted).
They offer stock, RS and several upgrade options (including lower prices if you ship them your old turbo's).
They are pretty known in Russian and are working together with several tuners (that are running top time world record holders).
I would definatly suggest you check with them :).

Still sucks and hope you get it all fixed (including oil screen/valve) soon! Good luck.
*in case you go with turbosystems (or any other seller), please review and share your experience :).

Ive just recently had both my turbos replaced as they had play in them, 2014 plate with 16k miles on the clock. The turbo oil strainer had blocked causing the turbo damage. I went with OEM turbos again and now have the newest revision of strainer and hoses fitted. I don't do a lot of miles but will be getting regular oil changes and flushes now say every 3-4k miles. Unbelievable that a top of the range car can fail due to a 2 quid filter

It’s sickening when you pay the sort of money you do for a low mileage RS6 and the oil strainer causes turbo failure. I’ll be halfing the oil change intervals now, that’s for sure

Really a mystery that cars with such low mileage gets turbo failures, I could understand if a car has heavy moods on engine then turbos could fail, but if car stock and been serviced at Audi dealer regularly turbos can’t fail so quickly, only one thing then car came from a factory as defective

Exactly, on a standard car that’s been serviced at lesser intervals than factory recommendations it’s crazy. Whether there was a defective batch of turbos at a certain time that were installed to these cars is a possibility but it appears that the added issue of the oil strainer blocking or partially blocking and effectively starving the turbo of oil is the main culprit for failure.

Do you have full main dealer history? And car is standard? If so I'd be asking Audi to pay. At the very least I'd expect a contribution towards the cost.

Hi Mike, issue I have is that one service was done at a specialist garage and not at audi main dealer therefore i presume there would be no chance of any contribution from Audi. I’m still waiting for the warranty company to give me a decision on the claim. Taking ages, which has me a bit uneasy. But I’ve been told they will be in contact with me tomorrow so fingers crossed.
