PE down on power

Post by MountainMutant » Sun Jul 21, 2019 8:35 am

I’ve been noticing lately that my car feels a bit flat and down on power.

The brutal acceleration is not there.

I’ve been doing a load of short journeys lately so haven’t opened her up in a while. Went out for a run yesterday and it’s definitely not right.

No engine light. What might cause this? I wondered if it could be spark plugs as not sure they have been changed. Will check with Audi on Monday.

Anything else I can check? I have bought a Carista which will hopefully show any errors.

Hot weather? Always makes a difference... Forced induction always feels the strongest in the depths of winter.

Hi MM,

Funny you should mention this as I sometimes feel the same with my non PE.

How long have you had the car? I wonder if you are just getting used to the power?

When I first got mine I thought it was well scary - I even thought it might be chipped as I felt the power was just immense..., but now I am used to it more, it doesn't scare me so much...

But when I take friends out for a blast they are amazed by it, and I think that it doesn't feel as fast as it did.... But I am sure its the same, just that I am used to it now....

Maybe you need to try an evening drive on a quiet straight road, put it in Dynamic, and then boot it from rolling and see if it still has the scare factor??

I would be surprised if there is anything 'wrong'?? But I am no engineer so what do i know

But do keep us posted if you do find something is wrong...

Cheers
Lig.

There was a guy on here about a year ago who had a similar issue (Shanek) with a PE. Had it tested on the same rolling road he'd had it on two years prior and it was down 40bhp and about 75lbft. Never got it resolved with Audi and ended up selling the car.

At the time mine felt like it was doing something similar, but had new spark plugs, oil and air filter and it felt really good again. Now mine went into Audi for a service recently and it came out feeling a little down on power. Wasn't sure if it was my imagination or not. I think one of my discs is catching on the front and the tyres are 17K miles old so it may well be down to that. Drawback is I find as soon as the doubts creep in it's hard to shake them. I have no confidence in Audi to diagnose or resolve issues so I'm going to go to an independent. Once done I will report back if I find anything...

It’s definitely not me getting used to it.

Power not right. It was recently serviced at Audi but I don’t think plugs were changed. It’s 2.5 years old and I’m sure I saw somewhere plugs should be changed every 2 years on the PE?

Problem with these cars is you drop them in a garage saying power is down, mechanic drives it and says ‘feels fecking fast to me’ but you know your car and how it should be!

Plugs need to be changed at 2 years. Audi should have advised you of this when it was serviced recently.

I've had similar experiences with Audi over the years trying to tell me everything's fine and I know it's not. In my experience the dealer is there almost to frustrate the ownership experience when there are problems otherwise they or the manufacturer have to admit liability and spend money. Only when there is a clear fault do you get improved customer service. I've recently had the front shocks replaced on mine. Got it back and the car doesn't ride as well as it did. Been back to Audi and they seemed to be of the opinion, "car's fine go away". Whereas I know there is a difference in how it was and how it is now and it's not an improvement! Audi don't seem to want to listen. Hence me looking for a good independent specialist....

Have done a Carista scan and no faults recorded.

Do we know why the PE needs plugs at 2 years? Maybe that is my problem.

Car is 2.5 years and 14000 miles. Plugs not been changed.

It was something Audi mandated for the PE engine. I think it was in response to the state of plugs coming out of the non-PE engines so it was introduced to reduce the risk of damage to the engine by knackered plugs. That's my conclusion from what I've read and seen but don't know for certain. I asked to see the plugs when they were changed on mine but never got them. I did wonder why...

If I remember rightly they also changed the type as well for the replacements.

After waiting half a day for Audi to carry out my 2 year service including plugs they finally told me they didn't have enough plugs to carry it out so they never got changed at the time. I ended up going 3 years and 30k on original plugs with no issues.

Mine is definitely feeling down on power now. Obviously the hotter weather will play a part but I've noticed the throttle response just isn't there. Checked the oil and the coolant and both have dropped recently. Huge amounts of hot air coming off the car. Cooler temps don't seem to improve it either. I'm booked in for a service and a dyno session in the next couple of weeks so will see what that shows.

Anybody else having any issues particularly as it's been a lot hotter recently?
