Cracked headlight

Post by rs4AAK » Sat Apr 06, 2019 9:59 pm

I was just walking past the car and I noticed a crack underneath the bottom of the headlight! I’m not sure how it’s happened, possibly a stone?
It’s 2015 FL with matrix headlights. Do you think it will cause condensation etc? I’m not sure if it’s cracked all the way through or just on the surface. I can’t imagine that the unit is cheap!
(Sorry about the poor pic but it was getting dark).

Strange place to get a crack. Could be stress crack but impossible to say. Unlikely you will get condensation in the headlight because of the crack as they are not sealed units anyway. They have a fan to keep the leds cool and it circulates air inside. Also have an air filter fitted too.

Thanks for that it’s reassuring as I thought it was sealed. More expensive than I thought for new one!

Check the A6 forum - there have been a few cracked headlights reported there - and people have had them changed F.O.C. The cracks looked just like yours. There was a technical bulletin about it IIRC. www.vwaudiforum.co.uk

Could you point in the right direction, I’ve searched the vwaudi forum and seen a post about cracked headlights. I can’t see anything about the technical bulletin?. Thanks

I was thinking of the thread where the OP posted:

"Update - this is a warranty claim! It's booked in for a couple weeks time.

Apparently speaking to some of the staff this is a "TPM"?? on the subject and there was in fact some confusion about my visit. They thought I wanted the work done and in fact I just wanted a "warranty or not" assessment, confusion caused by the fact that the service dept are already aware of this as an issue."

Several other people on that thread posted photos of near identical cracks in their lights, too.
