I had a set done for the RS4. I had them Zircotec coated. They are a satin black and match really well with the diffuser.ImageImageImage

You had them Zircotec coated and they are pitted!? This is not a liquid coating applied on the surface, a very different process all together.

They shot blast the tips first, so yes no problem.
From memory mine were about £80 the pair.

Mine are awful, is it bumper off to remove them? Assume you can run without them for a week?

I've had an interesting response from Audi UK stating "this is a common issue & will not be covered under warranty".

Surely these parts should last longer than 7 months (in my case), surely?

So based on their opinion if something is common then warranty doesn't cover it. What about making these things better in the 1st place.
My tips were made in China, now that doesn't mean all Chinese products are bad but certainly cost savings have been made!
It really comes down to your dealer and their goodwill, Audi UK seem to be distancing themselves even further away from their own product that they import.

Can drop the exhaust instead but query which is less time consuming
