Post by Iain » Thu Feb 21, 2019 5:37 pm

Quick one

Walking past the car in the sun, yes sun in Wayelz!!! - noticed some pitting on my exhaust tips.....I think from memory other peeps have had issue, what was the outcome with Audi - I'll drive mine down to Cardiff dealer and ask for them to replace them - 14months old and 17kmiles

Cheers

Depends on how your dealer is with goodwill.
I have had 2 new sets on my RS4.
The first set lasted about 8 months and were pitted again, the second set I have had Zircotec coated and so far so good.
You can but ask!

Don’t waste your time, get them powder coated. If you get them replaced they’ll just pit again.

Went to the local dealer today - known issue with them and therefore no warranty - the technical bulletin? from Audi refers to rusting, not pitting on my black tips.

They offer a cleaning kit for the chrome tips and thats about it.

Best I could hope for, they said, was a good will gesture from supplying dealer. TBH I'm going to wait until they look fukced then as Boyakasha says, get them powder coated.

This thread got me wondering so I checked my tips and they are worse than the OP posted, and my car only has 6k miles. So powder coating is fine, despite the heat from the exhaust? I am due to take a set of wheels to my local refurb Shop so will ask them to do the tips at the same time.

What markp said!
Been "prepping" the tips with ACF before each winter and after 45,000km they still look brand new.

ACF 50, never heard of that. Does it just protect what's there, or will it remove the pitting?

So it is. Better get me some. It's not going to do anything about the current pitting though I take it - just stop it getting worse?

I had the tips replaced some 9 months ago and mine have done the same. Audi dealer said they had seen this before and if I want to fix I need to buy new ones. As a quick fix, I brought a high temp gloss black paint touch up pen off eBay that covers it up enough not to notice it as much..

My car has also suffered pretty badly with the pitting, I've barely done 25,000 miles and they've been like this for a while now:
IMG_5975.JPG
I picked up one of those black Dykem markers to see what difference it would make, I tried to clean up as much of the crud as possible with a spot of autosol on a rag but didn't go as far as using some wire wool as I assumed it would have taken most of the existing finish off. Took about an hour to give both tips 3 coats:

As a temporary solution its fine, obviously if you stop and examine it you can still see the pitting where the original finish has chipped away. The Dykem pens are like felt tips markers, I struggled to get deep down the side of the tips but overall am happy for an hours work and £9
