C8 RS6 - what do you think it will do to C7 prices?

Post by zappy-chops » Wed Feb 06, 2019 10:06 am

With the C8 RS6 expected to launch later this year, what are you folks thinking it will do to C7 prices?

People often expect that a new model will mean the older model will take a price drop, but the opposite can also happen as the new C8 will be £100k+ (with some options) and there will be a huge amount of press when the car launches that will generate interest. Some people who become interested will soon realise that they can't afford or don't want to spend the money on a new C8 so will go for a C7 instead - hence helping C7 prices.

Interested in your views.

66 plate Range Rover Autobiography (for wafting around)

Favourite car ever owned:
1971 Citroen DS21 - The Goddess (pure art on wheels)

I really dont think that there will be a massive drop at all just very steady depreciation. It may trim some off the very last/most expensive C7s off the line - but the cars are still very well sought after and an inspirational car to petrol heads so they'll be alright. It think the C8 being £100k++ will work in the C7s favour (making it look like a bargain).

Just my 0.02c

I agree with the comments above. I don't think the C7 will currently have a massive hit. It will depreciate but I think it will show a similar pattern to the B8 RS4. That car initially criticised for not having much torque yet now it's quite sought after as it has much more character compared to the latest B9 RS4. Also the B8 RS4 looks much more purposeful. Looking at the new A6 I reckon the new C8 will look too staid. I think the current C7 RS6 looks so purposeful and aggressive and will go down as one of Audi's greats- so it may help with residuals! But then I would say that...... as I've just bought a C7 RS6.

There will be a LOT of supply of C7 as Audi have produced pretty much what they could sell. Unlike C6 which was by comparison a limited run.

Values will continue to fall, and once C8 lands and folk step out from their C7 into these they will fall further because of the volume of supply.

Add economic uncertainty and the general softening of the performance car market prices will only head one way. There won’t be any hardening of prices.

According to how many left there were approx. 2800 C7's on the roads at the end of 2018. This includes the performance model (1.2K). This shows two things... 1. It's rare and 2, there's a limited market.

This compares to a roughly equivalent number of Lambourghini's, over 25,000 Porsche 911's, over 10,000 Ferrari's etc. Not as rare as a Bugatti though, only 142 :)

I don't think the C7 will continue to devalue at anything but it's current rate, which is very slow now for the older cars. (4 to 5 years). I estimate mine is still worth what I paid for it, to the right buyer of course.

I'll bet there's some real bargains to be had, and certainly will be if any dealer has a C7 in stock.

At nearly 3k it's not rare. C6 is rare, that's in the low hundreds.

:bash:

Certainly the C6 is more rare but 2800 is a very low figure for a model of car ownership, on par with a £250K Lambourghini as I said. There's roughly 56 million people in the UK over the age of 17. That means that only 1 in about 20,000 people of drivers age own an RS6 C7. 1 in 7000 own a Rolls Royce, 1 in 4700 a Bentley... Do I need to carry on?

Yes, I haven't taken off people who can't drive for one reason or another, but the figures would remain proportionally the same.

Trust me, 2800 is rare :)

I don’t get your argument!

How are you comparing an RS6 with a Ferrari or a Lambo? Clearly both of those are more desirable.

RS6 ten a penny around me, just about second to RR.

Well I wasn't to know you lived in a slum of thieving scumbags was I? :)

Seriously, if you don't get my argument then I can't help you. Where I live I very rarely see another RS6 C7.

It’s a nice car, but it’s nothing more. It’s far more run of the mill than it’s predecessors. And in that, and the topic in hand, value is dictated by volume and market and in that respect there’s a lot of volume for a decreasing market. Prices will follow.

There are 4 C7 RS6s in my (market) town. And which 250k Lamborghini has reached close to 2800 sales in UK since 2013. Or since any date for that matter?

You live in a very nice (market) town Mark. I'm not surprised there's 4. I would have thought there's be more.

If it helps, Lamborghini sells around 350 cars each year in the UK (in recent years at least). That is before the Urus, which is expected to double that number.

The point I was trying to make is that you can’t compare rarity of a “250k Lamborghini” to the latest RS6. The number of RS6 on the roads in the UK is about the same as the number of every model Lambo since the Miura.
