Standard steel discs and pads.. How long should they last?
Re: Standard steel discs and pads.. How long should they last?
Seems fair Mike.
I guess I'm just feeling bruised after the failure to fix the grabbing brakes, the 7 buckled wheels, 4 new summers, 4 new winters.....!!
Anyway Bicester Scramble on Sunday if anyone is there?

Re: Standard steel discs and pads.. How long should they last?
My car is at 26k and all discs/pads are fine (sadly as I have Audi maintenance paying for them until December so would prefer to have them swapped before then, so far they incurred zero cost).
They do squeak unless you go out and thrash it with hard braking once a month; first world problems and all that.

Re: Standard steel discs and pads.. How long should they last?
i'm on original discs and pads all round @ 34k miles (a lot of mway) and I have a bit of squeaking now at times. In for service soon so they will tell me what % worn mine are - car is 2017 PE.

A timely post for me. Mine have just come back as 98%worn. Can’t see it myself. Discs are also marked as urgent. I’m at 42k and (including the originals ) this will be my 3rd set of discs and pads. Harsh driving? I get 16-18k out of a set of tyres so I can’t be that harsh.

Maybe I should consider myself lucky!!SimonR wrote:A timely post for me. Mine have just come back as 98%worn. Can’t see it myself. Discs are also marked as urgent. Sounds like hard driving or long periods of downtime.
All OEM?

Re: Standard steel discs and pads.. How long should they last?
Out of interest why are the OEM discs and is so expensive? Are the better after market options available and presumably they are not rocket science to fit?

I’ll not need to change discs at all, if I do it’ll be once in 200k miles. Pads maybe at 100k miles. Some are getting through 5 sets in less than 100k miles

I had my RS4 for 9.5 years and can see myself keeping this one for this long, so might be worth it! Although I only changed front discs and pads once on the RS4 and it still had the original rear disks and pads when sold! (79k).

You're looking at about 10 to 12k for a set off ebay.
Re: Standard steel discs and pads.. How long should they last?
My car is on 28k, it's on it's second set of disks and pads, and they are far from warn but have developed a mild but annoying warp. When I change again I'll try and get an AP or higher grade disk.
The front disks on my 14 plate RS4 were exactly the same, mild warp long before they reached the end of life.
My personal experience / opinion is that OEM are designed to fail, as a tidy revenue stream for Audi.

Unlikely they are warped. More likely you have pad deposits from not using them heavily enough.MikeBirt wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2019 9:09 pmMy car is on 28k, it's on it's second set of disks and pads, and they are far from warn but have developed a mild but annoying warp. Did 6 laps of a track day at Croft a six weeks ago, and they were on fire - never seen brakes smoke like that (yes traction control was off) they were fine after that for a while and now as soon as there is any heat in them they warp. When cold, straight a an arrow.
I have had a number of setups on different vehicles that have done this. Just poor quality disks in my opinion.
The face of all 4 disks is as clean as you could ever hope for...
