Winter tyres or second set of wheels?

Post by zappy-chops » Wed Nov 14, 2018 6:47 pm

Hi folks, picking up my '17 RS6 PE tomorrow (first ever Audi) and already starting to think about winter tyres. I live up in Scotland and have already had a dusting of snow and numerous sub-zero frosty mornings. Ideally I would like to get a second set of wheels and pop winter tyres on those (possibly 20s rather than the 21s on the car) but do I want to spend that sort of money? :bash: Perhaps I do.

Could always swap the tyres over but for some reason I have a dislike to frequent tyre changes on the same wheel. Should I care about that?

* Should I buy a second set of wheels, and if so from where? I am a fan of keeping things original so they would need to be OEM.
* Where is a good place to get them from. Not sure I want to be buying wheels on ebay. Definitely not sure I want my stealer to bend me over for a spanking either :assflash:
* Am I being a woos and should just get the tyres changed on the existing wheels, and back again in the spring, and back again next winter, and... repeat?

Any thoughts welcome.

Cheers. :beerchug:

Audi do an official OEM 20” winter wheel which is narrow in width. You can many sets for sale on german ebay. Looks like this.

if you can bear the car looking like it has the wrong wheels on then pick up a set of the skinny 20s with winter tyres already on, on german ebay as rtd suggested. Normally plenty on there. I'd then put some huge spacers on to bring the wheel out to where it should be.
Personally though, I'd go for the wider 20s. Look much better and considering that they'll probably be on about 6 months of the year then why would you want yuor wheels to look less decent that normal just cos it's winter.
The other option is another set of 21s. Less choice of winter rubber on the 21 and costs more though. But there is a set on here for sale for about £1750 with winter tyres.

But I'm with you; the least number of tyres changes the better for me; less risk of those clumsy tyre fitters marking an alloy.

I’m running 30mm back spacers and 15mm front with the winter wheels and still car looks under wheeled (if that’s a term I can use).

Didn't know these wheels existed so many thanks for posting. But I could not live with that odd look for 4 months of the year (I usually run winter tyres from early Dec to late March).

I'll probably just swap the tyres out this year and then see how it goes from there.

Or run the standard 20s with no compromise on looks:

I've been running these for 3 seasons. Now can't bear the under-arch & am looking for spacers, but can't see what size people are fitting with these wheels. I was thinking 15 at the back and 12 at the front - does anyone have any comments or pictures of this setup?

I've been using second sets for many years, winter smaller than the summer ones, so for you 20" as Mikefish suggests.
I'm in the Soft South (Home Counties) but even here I typically have them on for 5 or 6 months of the year.

Remember, if you're driving to/from work it can be a cold frosty morning and cool evening any time from October to May!
And winter tyres don't stop working above 7C, it's just that summer ones are usually better above that crossover point but a lot worse below.
I have a friend who lives in Northern Ireland and he generally has winter tyres on all year!

It makes everything easier, the winter wheels with deeper tyres are less prone to damage and you have all winter to sort out your summer wheels; clean, refurbish, new tyres etc.
One of my summer wheels is waiting right now to go off to have a pothole-induced buckle removed.

My winter wheels are OEM, but not in the best condition so cheap, though covered in winter muck no-one can see that!

I have a set of standard 20” wheels painted in gloss black, very similar to Mike’s with Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4s on, which I am selling. They have only done about 1000 miles.

I also have the original Pirelli P-Zero summer tyres that came on them, which have only covered 3000 miles.

Looking for £1600 for wheels with winters and the summers, excluding shipping.

I also have spacers for front and back, which make them look loads better on the car. They are a pair of 10mm and a pair of 15mm H&R hubcentric spacers with longer bolts and locking wheel bolts. Looking for £125 plus postage.

Are the wheels in good nick? Any scrapes/chips? If not, I'll have them. Could you PM me a photo of each wheel? Many thanks.

The wheels are in good condition. Certainly no scrapes, but I need to double check for any chips. I’m away from home at the moment, so will try to get pics on here by Friday night.

Got all the details Simon - thanks.

Folks, I am looking to buy a set of the following 20" wheels to run with winter tyres through the nasty weather season. I am told they will look better on the car with spacers and they are included in the sale (20mm and 30mm). Just wanted to check if there is any reason this won't work on a 2017 PE that currently has 21" wheels. Can I just whack the spacers and wheels straight on? The car has ceramic brakes (don't know if that makes a difference). Also, do the spacer sizes sound right (20mm and 30mm)?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

See my photos above. Same as your but lower. I assume the spacers sizes you gave are per axle and not per wheel?
In the photos above I have 15mm spacers on the rear and 12mm spacers on the front. No issues with ceramics.
