Exhausts

This is about looks, not about performance or noise. I'm looking for agreement, disagreement, suggestions, ideas, thoughts...

I think the RS6 exhausts look great in certain lights, especially when you can't see down the shrouds but when you can see down them to the pipes, mufflers and road surface, which you can quite often, well, to my eyes they look cheap and tacky and in no way reflect the racing sport heritage of the car. For this reason I often think the S models have much better looking system with their twin dual outlets.

Some pics to illustrate the RS problem...

That last pic is of my own car with the new Remus exhaust system fitted and in my eyes the shiny newness of it just makes the problem worse.

Remus make some really good looking tail pipe finishers...

Of course though there's no room for these through the standard diffuser and the back box outlets would have to be modified to allow for wider spacing.

ABT on the RS6-R do just this with their own exhaust and a new diffuser...

Akrapovic also attempt to solve the problem of course...

I wonder if with mods the tailbox outlet pipes these finishers could be fitted to other exhausts? I doubt Akrapovic would like it of course but the real loser would be the exhaust manufacture who with Remus, Milltek and many others don't get any branding because nothing is visible.

I'm prepared to spend a bit of money on this but would welcome advice, criticism, experience and of course interested comments. Am I missing a trick? Is there something I'm not taking into account? Anyone know of a better CF diffuser, etc?

Finally, just to show what I mean, the following mock up, photoshop, whatever, shows the kind of thing that might be possible and is a million times more in keeping with the nature of the car.

Admittedly the car is lowered, as is the roof line, but it looks amazing in my eyes.

Thanks all.

Sorry been busy at work.
If you go for just twin pipes at the exit then you will need to re-shape the rear diffuser or get a new one. The Abt one does look good in my opinion and quite aggresive. Like you say the alternative is to do something like the Akrapovic system, which is still a separate cover that goes over the actual exhaust exits. Does that actually give you what you want in terms of the look though?
I would have thought that a good custom exhaust maker could make the finisher pipes in the style you want either to weld on to your existing exhaust or act as a sperate piece like the original. That should not be too expensive, as not much in the way of materials but more for labour. The tricker bit could be modifying the diffuser to look right, doable but you would need a good custom bodyshop to do that or maybe graft in a bit from a S6 diffuser?

Thanks for your thoughts and comments Glyn. I've initiated talks with a localish carbon fibre specialist used to working on cars. I'll of course need to get an exhaust company too who can modify the back box outlets without interfering with the volume controls :)

Not sure what I want exactly at the moment. Easiest would of course be a pair of twins per the S models, ABT and to some extent Akrapovic. I've already ascertained by the way that ABT won't sell me a diffuser. Only available with an exhaust on an RS6-R apparently, and they're sold out. Anyway, back the design, I also do like the idea of centrally mounted outlets per my last pic.

Anyway as it seems no one else is interested, I'll proceed on my own and update my build thread when the work is done etc. And of course it's still an IF it is done too. If the cost is prohibitive, it'll have to wait a while.

Many thanks,

I have Capristo installed and their twin pipes isn't the best looking. They have one pipe which is wider and one which is narrower and the narrower one looks like it's pulled off from a Golf 1.4! :P

So I hear you DaveBee but there's no autoshop here in HK I trust enough to have something tailor made. At least I don't get to see my exhaust/tips very often. Cheers

Phil

RS = oval, S = twin. Oval for me all day long.

When I bought the Tubi exhaust for my RS4 I went for the quad pipe option which had one pipe slightly larger than the one next to it. Thought this gave it a real menacing look and made a nice change from the oval pipes every other RS4 was wearing. Didn't seem very popular though as many on here didn't think an RS should have round tail pipes.
