Only if your cars is post 2016 as uses the smart phone interface
If prior, they take out the head unit, send it to Germany for a factory software update to allow the smart phone interface to work.
No music for 10 days, and £695 fitted

I have a July 2016 car, does anyone know if i can get carplay via a software update or is it a hardware updgrade? I went to my local Audi dealer and theyn just told me i can't do it but the guy i was dealing with did not fill me with confidence!

Is it MY2016 or MY2017?

I am hoping to get this done to my car (a 2017 PE). I know this is going to be a dumb question
but what does "and uses the smart phone interface" mean?

Its worth talking to the company below for official carplay, he does everything through Audis portal so its added to your vin as if Audi was doing it themself, he comes to you as well.
