21" OEM wheel damage frequency

Post by koruki » Fri Sep 07, 2018 1:07 am

Having owned many cars over the years I've never buckled wheels this often on any of them as much as the OEM 21" RS6 ones. Just curious if its my problem or is it common for other owners. I love the look of the OEM and don't want to change, but after 'repairing' 4 wheels and replacing one at $3000nzd I'm getting quite frustrated. It's like they made the wheels out of playdough. I've had 21" OEM wheels on my Porsche cayenne S for many years without a single issue driving on the exact same roads. Mind you we don't have the best roads here but any little dip or pot whole seems to buckle them.

There certainly seems to be an issue with the non-PE 21" rims.

The PE rims aren't immune either, however they seem to be less prone to deformation.

What is Audi's stance on the issue in NZ?

I have just had 4 new tyres today and 3 of my wheels were buckled, very slightly but buckled, I had no idea they were and could not feel anything when driving, I will raise it with Audi but doubt i'll get anywhere, perfect excuse to upgrade though :D

I think a lot depends on the roads in your area and how you drive I have a 14 plate with 36k no issues at all with the OEM 21’s

Thanks for the feedback, our roads aren't the best, now I rather just go offroad than risk a small hole, at least I know the quattro will sort me out and get me off the gravel. The PE wheels are nice but I don't want to know how much OEM PE wheels are after paying for the pre-PE 21"

Wasn’t there a “damaged wheel registry” on the forum? I think the idea was to collect enough responses to them take to Audi and try to get them to do something about it

Yes there was. I thought somebody would have posted a link by now. And that it would of come up in a search before starting a new thread. Which is why I didn't bother looking for it.

I forgot to touch wood when I posted cause now the new $3000 replacement wheel from Audi has two new buckles .. 5th one now and I'm looking at alternatives. Any recommended brands for good wheels that match the RS6?

Yeah, anything other than Audi OEM 21s.

The 20s look nice when set up properly.
PE wheels are nice and almost no buckling incidents.
Plenty of aftermarket options; ADV, Vossen, Ispiri, HRE etc

How big is the crack? Can it not be despaired?

I would run on a repaired wheel on a car like this.
