How does your gearbox behave?

Post by EmilA » Sun Jul 29, 2018 8:47 pm

Thought it’s best to keep my two threads separate. I’ve noticed recently that when going in and out of 4th gear I occasionally get a little thump similar to an SMG gear change. I get it driving along in comfort mode in city traffic so don’t have to be driving fast. Though today I had a spritied drive today and noticed that it’s a very strong thump like when you would be in SMG 5 in an e46 M3, more prominent when going from 4th into 5th and more common to occur under boost.

I’ll be calling my local Audi garage tomorrow but what type of gearbox is in this car. A ZF? Is there one set of gears for odd numbers and another for even? Any idea what the thump could be?
I know with the GTR’s they had circlip issues and all sorts of other gearbox related faults that could be rectified.

Just got to figure out the logistics too, as I’m flying back to the U.K. next week and car is staying in Brussels. Unless Audi Brussels can take a look at it?
I’m assuming warranty work is warranty work and Audi Brussels can complete it if Audi U.K. authorise it?

I have same issue but only when the gearbox is in sport mode, but not always, only when im in traffic at low speeds (2nd or 3rd gear). In drive i have no problem.

No problem with mine. The gearbox is a ZF8.

My guess the 1st thing Audi will do is reset the parameters and see if that fixes the issue.

Yup that’s what I thought Audi would do. Just like to get it fixed and working so it’s 100%. An old E60 M5 had a similar issue and that car got sold cheap because of it, worst timing as it was for sale when it happened!

My gearbox can be noticeably clunky at times. i spoke to Audi about it and they just claimed it was a characteristic of the gearbox. Some times it does and some times it doesn't. It's very reminiscent of how the RS4 felt when the clutches were contaminated. Seems to be worse with the increase in temps. Not sure if it is indicative of an issue or not to be honest. I'm going to mention it again next time the car is in.

Is it in every gear or a specific one like mine?

Mine doesn't clunk in any gear, up or down, when being driven in auto... comfort or sport. The only clunky gear changes are when in manual and are down to the driver not the gearbox which even does it's level best to smooth them out for me.

Drove back from Brussels to Birmingham last week and dropped my RS off to have the fault investigated. Managed to replicate the fault each time when I changed gears using the paddles.

Mine seems to be between 4th / 5th / 6th and is noticeable in manual when changing up. Very clunky. There can be a clunk when the car changes down from 2nd to 1st as well.

It's going into Audi later so we shall see what they say. Can't say that I'm hopeful of them recognising there is an issue...

The dealer my car is at have performed a software update which has apparently fixed the issue. I’ll be testing it throughly when I get the car back. There are other issues this dealer has identified on other parts of the car and now waiting on the supplying dealer to pay for this work as it should have been picked up on at their pre approved inspection report.

Defiantly get Audi to check it over

My gearbox is very similar, 4th to 5th in manual under load can sometime feel like I've hit a brick in the road but its not just in manual these days. Gear changes in Auto in comfort, Auto and Dynamic mode can be very clunky and when engaging reverse it feels like someone has driven into the back of the car.
Its been into the Stealer and they have done the full gearbox Adaptation where all the gearbox parameters and clutch pack engagement points have been reset but the shifts are no smoother and following the Adaptation, downshifts when in manual mode have become very abrupt with little to no rev matching being done.
It will be going back very soon to see if Audi can work out whats going on.

That does sound a lot like the issues I had before I dropped it off. I made a video of me driving it with my phone recording and you can see the camera shake a lot from 4th to 5th while other changes are smooth.
Only had the car 9 weeks, I really hope they sort it all out and I get it back soon. Just glad I went AUC. I am highly skeptical that a software update would have fixed it, my last performance car was a GTR and I know about all the gearbox issues you could have with those
