C5 to C7

Post by MountainMutant » Fri May 25, 2018 3:34 pm

Hi guys

Have owned my C5 RS6 for 12 years and can finally make the jump to a 16/17 plate C7 (once I get mine up for sale and sold). Looking at Performance models.

Keep trawling through Pistonheads and ebay for my 'perfect spec' car and there is always something missing, or spec right, wrong colour car.

I've owned Daytona for all this time and whilst I love it I fancy a change. Quite like Sepang but wife thinks it will draw too much of the wrong attention ie nicked. There is a lovely exclusive Racing Mica Blue on Pistonheads. Looks nice in the pics but not sure what it's like in reality. It's way up north to me and a little steep cost wise.

Latest car I have seen does not have the HUD. I've never seen this in action. Is it worth having? The big kid in me says YES!

Also the adaptive cruise seems to be missing on a lot of the cars. Presume the visible cue of this is the black circles in the front fog light position. Again worth having? Whilst I'm 50/50 motorway miles I like driving/being in control so not sure I'd use it.

I've not driven the latest model yet but can't think of any other car I'd rather have, even having owned one for so long!

Having recently made the change myself, I'd say go for it, and welcome!!

I only had C5's for 11 years so a mere youngster  compared with yours!

The best description of the change I have come up with so far is that the old C5 was like a teenager - huge fun, full of energy, and liable to throw a grumpy fit every now and again - loved it to bits though!! My new C7 (not quite as new as yours will be - 63 plate) is like I've suddenly got an "adult" car - it feels much more grown up! The performance is great (and my C5 was stage 2 tuned) and the whole experience is more refined and calmer! That may change when I let MRC loose on it, but for now I still have 6 months of Audi warranty to run so it stays unmolested!

I was lucky in that I found one with pretty well my ideal spec straight away - including an Audi exclusive paint colour :-)

Look forward to seeing you here!

Hi Dave

Yes I'm a bit of a long time lurker here.

I keep wondering whether I'm doing the right thing. The wife drove the car off the drive the other day with me watching and it still looks and sounds great. Usually I'm driving in it and you don't get to see and hear it properly!

I dont do much milage (6000pa) and the thought of all that depreciation whilst sitting on the drive is a bit off putting but the other side is your're only on this planet once, enjoy youself! I plan to keep the car long term again until petrol is banned!

Hi,

Exciting news on your move to the C7 Performance

I've got both the HUD and the Adaptive cruise control and would spec both again. The HUD is good, and if you put into manual lap mode you get little change up graphic green to red etc. Its great through for watching speed as well without having to look down and you subliminally always know what speed you are going without really looking if that makes sense.

Adaptive cruise control is great (much better system than what I had on my RS4) as the RS6 version allows stop start traffic jam movement and also great really great for those long running 50mph limits on the motorways. And yes you know a car has it with the presence of the black radar circles on the front as you say

Hope you find the right car for you

Cheers!

Another quick question....Ceramic brakes

I know how easily RS6 brakes warp and like the idea of ceramic brakes, BUT how long do they last in comparison to normal disks?

They are VERY expensive and presume they don't last for ever!?

Never had HUD and to be honest, not something that appeals to me so cant comment really. Don't have ceramics either so again can't comment. However I would not be without the Adaptive Cruise Control... it keeps my licence free of points whilst being spied on by the average speed cameras that seem to be everywhere these days.
Good luck with your search...

I have the 'ramics on mine, and they are certainly effective! Can't say how long they last, but hope it's a lot longer than the standard ones as replacing will be costly!

They are noisy however! Mine had new pads on when I got it, and maybe I didn't do the bedding in properly, but I get a lot of squeal when they are warm (OK when cold). I have yet to figure out what to do about it!!

I have racing mica blue, which with the black pack looks great. Always gets lots of good comments about the colour

I’ve had the C5 C6 and now the C7. As said the C7 is a real adult car with stunning performance. I wouldn’t waste your money on ceramics. As for spec it’s down to you depending on how you use it day to day. You will love it compared to the C5 which is quite old now

I really wanted one with HUD but sadly I hardly use it. It’s a nice toy and useful with the SatNav but that’s about it for me...

When I’m really speeding, I know I’m going license worryingly fast without seeing the speed on the windscreen - instead, I’m concentrating looking 200m down the road!

Adaptive cruise on the other hand I use a lot more but again I wouldn’t say essential.

I Like the idea of ceramics but I’m not sure the amount of time my car will spend on a track (probably 1 day a year) can justify the cost... maybe you plan on doing more but if not standard steels hold up fine on for fast road driving...

You know you're going to get a bag full of opinions when it comes to spec, but I'd have to say that (based on your mileage) ACC wouldn't be top of my list, I had it on my last RS4 and it is very good indeed, but only justifiable if you do a reasonable amount of motorway miles. HUD is ok, but the Audi system is a bit clumsy and I'd suggest that you can live without it.

If I were you, the better options for the C7 are DRC (unless you need to tow) and a pano roof, after that I'd concentrate on age, mileage and colour and make sure it hasn't been mapped. The PE has most of what you want anyway and I have to say that the car is a great ownership proposition, it does everything well and some things brilliantly and it's certainly up there with the best I've owned.

So, I put it into lap timer mode - I don't get the change up graphic, or am I being a muppet and you have to drive it in manual mode?

I will say if you do a lot of motorway miles then the Assistance Pack is very useful, particularly if partnered with the HUD and Speed Limit Display. The speed limit gets picked up by a camera in the rear view mirror and displays that in the HUD or it picks the speed limit from the nav. With the ACC and Lane Assist you get all of the information in the HUD making it for me a lot more useful. I wouldn't say the HUD was worth it to just display your speed but with the other bits it comes into it's own on the motorway.

You only get the graphic on the dash when in manual mode so I assume this is the same for the HUD.
