Can an RS6 with DRC tow?

Post by ChrisYates10 » Mon May 21, 2018 5:34 pm

Hello Everyone.

I’ve found a nice car with DRC and the Carbon Pack with Rear Diffuser, plus a Sports Exhaust.

Could I have an Audi retractable towbar fitted?

Thanks,

Chris

I’m pretty sure it’s not possible. It’s a different rear diffuser I think but that’s not the issue sure Audi didn’t sell em from new with that option guys who actually tow with them will know more

My brochure says "Dynamic Package. Includes a top speed restriction increase to 174mph*, RS sports suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (2MC),
Dynamic steering (1N8) and All-LED headlights including high-beam assist (PX2). Please note this option forces the removal of tow bar
bracket preparation (1D0)"

It has the same for all the DRC packs.

The accumulators(?) for the DRC (the cylinders that act as reservoirs for the hydraulic fluid for the DRC) are located where the tow bar would go. There is no possibility of an Audi retractable bar being fitted or, I suspect, an aftermarket retractable bar being fitted to a DRC car. As a result, the "towing preparation" is deleted from the car build. On a Mercedes, that means a larger battery and additional gearbox cooling; on an Audi that may just be a cut-out in the rear bumper...!

I towed with my RS6 but had the factory spec tow bar and air suspension. Also had an E63 AMG which was not type approved to tow despite the general E class being able to. Merc would not install a tow bar hence why I went for a new RS6.

It was a lovely car to tow with -

moto - if you get overtaken by a caravan you are going too slowly.

As I said in my PM to you Chris, you can’t fit a tow bar to it.

Thanks Everyone,

Towing would have been a nice to have, not a deal breaker.

my worry, knowing basically how DRC works would be the longer term effects?? On saying that when you load up the car with luggage and people it seems to cope with no issues

Guys - the problem with DRC is nothing to do with how it works, it is simply that the main tank and valves are in the way under the floor at the back.

DRC affects the damping (shock absorbers in old speak). If one were worried about load on the tail then there MIGHT be a reason to consider uprated springs, but the shocks should cope just fine.

as mentioned with the E63 AMG - it did not have type approval to tow thus would fubar the insurance and car warranty. I would be cautious to ask first if the RS6 with DRC is type approved - as would be a bad thing to crash and have issues later with insurance etc or warranty issues. check first then decide if you want to run the risks if any. As said personally I went for a RS6 with air and the tow pack so I knew there were no legal or car issues with towing.
