I mean it was raining and there were pools of water but I think he must have been going some.

There are some potholes on that stretch that could have been filled up with water so he may have hit that instead but no other cars involved, just him and the central reservation (which won)

This raises the question of wheel tethers, like they have in formula 1 and other motorsports.

How long until something like this is mandatory on road cars do you think?

Some great comments from the self righteous know it all's below the article! Too easy for people to jump to a conclusion just because its a nice fast car. Hope the driver is ok.

I saw a red r8 on princess parkway (Manchester) tonight all smashed up on the offside rear with wheel hanging off after hitting the central reservation. There was a car parked up behind it with its front offside smashed up to. Don't know how it happened.

It doesnt take demon speed to loose controle during aquaplanning. Maybe he was changing lanes during the aqua...
Almost lost the S in a soft bend + aqua planning. Car went straight for few meters, luckly i stayed cool and overreacted.

Cautionary images no doubt, but I'm with you Andy on this; loads of people commenting on Twitter certain that they know what happened. Quite likely the driver was going too fast for the conditions, but how fast is hard to say and anyone can get caught out by sudden changes in conditions. More than that though, you only have to look on the likes of "Most Shocking Accidents Caught On Camera" and wont have to watch many before you see some drivers innocently minding their own business (some, even stationary) and then hit or suddenly forced to take avoiding action, loosing control and then wiping out big time, whist the driver that caused the problem disappears off, sometimes unscathed into the distance. As for the barrier, a spinning two ton Audi is always going to dent it, and come off badly, but looks like here the car successfully protected its occupant(s) fortunately.
