Which Michelin Pilots are you running?

Post by rtd » Mon Apr 16, 2018 6:48 pm

I have to replace two of my Yokohama’s and have decided to just get a new set of 4 tires. Interested to know what other owners are running when it comes to the Michelin’s, PS4 or PS4S?

Fairy Nuff!!

I ran PS4S on my C5 RS6 - undoubtedly the best tyre I ran on there (and I had many over 11 years of ownership. Prior to that I had relied mainly on GY Assym 2, had dabbled with Vred and Michelin, and swore never to go near Pirrelli Pzero again!

Given that the weight and loads would be very similar PS4S would get my vote every time - just frustrating for me that they don't do it for the 21" wheels on my new one!

PS4S is the replacement for the PSS. Is is meant to be better and it's cheaper too. This is defo the tyre I'd choose for the 20s.

I moved my S8 (on 20s) from PSS to PS4S at the first opportunity (somewhat over a year ago) and they are brilliant.
(Been off for winter but about to go back on again)

I think it's the other way round (thanks Michelin for making things even more confusing.

Pretty sure the PS4's are a direct replacement for the PSS, but the PS4S replaces the Pilot Sport Cup 2's. It's all in the apostrophe:) That said, i could have that the wrong way round, but seen several debates on the M Forums & R Forums & i'm sure the above appears to be what i'm reading.

Edited to add that the PS4's are widely available in many sizes, but the PS4S is a little more specialist so not available in 18" for the Golf R, but is for the 19" option wheel & also not available in 19" for the M5, but is available for the 20" option wheel.

I really like these new PS4S's. I've had all generations of Pilot Sport including Super Sport and they're the largest improvement to date, as the wet performance has moved on remarkably thanks to the dual compound used. I'm also finding the wear rate has improved, along with how they’ve worn after 5k miles.

Not sure it replaces Cup 2's though, despite being a Formula E tyre. I think the tread block pattern would not be so suited to heavy cars pounding around dry track days and would overheat quicker.

Not sure about the price but all the rest is correct.
The "standard" PS4 is a downgrade from the PSS. The Sport Cup is really a track tyre.

MPS4S replaced MPSS.

I changed my MPSS to PS4S and the difference is very noticeable (RWD F10 M5) Awesome tyres. 21" should be released around now.

275/35/20 for RS6 on Tyreleader:
PSS £222
PS4S £213

Not a big difference now, but last time I looked the difference was about £30 per tyre.

PS4S is a MPSS replacement, not a cup tyre.

I can't recall where I got this info, but the short of what I read/viewed is that the PS4 is such a good performing tyre, very few are likely to find a limit where the PS4S would better it on the road. The PS4 has a few percent of compromise in fast road driving that you will likely never realise but better wear that you will.

I was happy with my PS3 and pleased with the PS4 as replacements so far.

On a heavy car like the C7 I would have thought the PS4 a better choice.

Take note all sports drivers… 2017 will see the launch of the latest super sports tyre from Michelin designed specifically for sports cars, high performance saloons and hyper cars. Initially in 19, 20 and 21 inch sizes with further sizes expected, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is described as the second generation Michelin Pilot Super Sport – a revered favourite amongst manufacturers and performance drivers the world over.

Why the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is a big deal
So why is the launch of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S so important? Michelin has taken the best elements of its Pilot Super Sport tyre and adds what the French manufacturer has learned from the highly lauded Pilot Sport Cup 2, to produce a thoroughbred sports tyre offering drivers and manufacturers a fantastic balance between performance, safety and longevity.
